The Governor-General, His Excellency, Sir Colville Young, has signed a Proclamation dissolving the National Assembly with effect from today, Monday, July 13th, 1998.
This is in accordance with Section 84 of the Belize constitution 1981, which provides that the Governor-General may, at any time, prorogue or dissolve the National Assembly and, that in the exercise of his powers to dissolve the National Assembly, the Governor-General shall act with the advice of the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Manuel Esquivel, yesterday announced the date for the General Elections as Thursday, 27th August, 1998.
