Press Release - January 20, 1998 - Ambergris Museum - After three years of dedicated effort by the Ambergris Historical Society, the Ambergris Museum & Cultural Center is almost ready to open its doors. To show patrons all that has been achieved, the AHS is staging a special preview evening for Saturday, January 24th. All those who have assisted the project both financially and with private collections have been invited to view the museum's inaugural exhibit.
The museum will be inaugurated shortly after this preview, and will then have regular scheduled hours for viewing by the public. Presently, a few pieces are yet to be installed before the exhibit can be opened to the public. These include mannequins depicting the Maya and Mestizo peoples who have inhabited the Caye and other interactive exhibits for children. These will better illustrate and reinforce the concepts conveyed by the historical themes presented.
The exhibit will give visitors a brief yet impressive overview of the communities who have inhabited Ambergris Caye, including the English buccaneers, the Maya and the more recent Mestizoes. It is hoped that after showing the progress of the project, enough support will be garnered to prepare the museum for inauguration and opening to the public. The Society would like to extend its sincere thanks to all who have helped to make this event possible, and is especially grateful to the following for refreshments and other food items donated for the evening: Ramirez Liquors, James Brodie & Co. Ltd., San Pedro Supermarket, San Pedro Holiday Hotel, Elvi's Kitchen, Lily's Hotel, Rock's Shopping Center, Sweet Basil Gourmet Restaurant.
