Candice Chavannes wins local Spelling Bee

On Thursday, February, 1998, at 11:00 p.m. the Zone 5 elimination of the fourth Annual National Coca Cola Spelling Bee, sponsored by Bowen and Bowen, was held at the Lions Den.

Participants in the contest were Marco Lopez and Linda Blease of the Caye Caulker Roman Catholic School, Sandi Larios and Carma Franklin of Island Academy, Candice Chavannes and Ronald Perez of St. Peter's Elementary and Yessica Bodden and Andrew Rodriguez of the San Pedro Roman Catholic School. Officials present at the zone elimination were Belize District Education Officer Mr. Ruben Gordon from the Ministry of Education and Mr. Ricky Lanza representative of Bowen and Bowen in San Pedro. Judges for the event were Mr. Jezz Rowland of Island Academy, Miss Angelica Reyes of St. Peter's Elementary and Miss Cruzita Novelo of Caye Caulker R.C. School. The time keeper was Mr. Frank Nuñez of St. Peter's College and score keepers were Mr. Oscar Vidal and Mrs. Lena Flores both of San Pedro R.C. School. The Quiz Mistress was Miss Katy Brickey, Standard 5 science teacher at the San Pedro R.C. School.

The eight participants were asked to spell words from a list that they had been given to study. After the third round of competition three of the students progressed to the second section of the competition. Yessica Bodden, Linda Blease and Candice Chavannes were all tied at 60 points each and were asked to spell words from a reserve list which they had not seen. After the second round in this section of the competition Candice Chavannes broke the tie and held first place. Yessica and Linda went on to another round of competition to break their tie at 60 points. Yessica spelled her word correctly and captured second place.

Candice Chavannes of St. Peter's Elementary and Yessica Bodden of the San Pedro R.C. School will represent zone 5 in Belize City at the next round of elimination in Belize City at the Fourth Annual National Coca-Cola Spelling Bee Contest.

Candice Chavannes represented zone 5 last year in the Third Annual National Coca-Cola Spelling Bee Contest in Belize City. She was attending San Pedro R.C. School at the time.
