Yes! Yes! Convention time is fast approaching. The host club for the Lions Convention is San Estevan and their whole community, is already going out of their way to make the 22nd Convention on 16 - 18 April, 1999, a most memorable occasion.
The San Pedro Lions Club has held a number of meetings with regards to this year's convention. San Pedro Convention Chairman, Lion Flora Ancona and her committee are working diligently on every detail to ensure a good impression does not go unnoticed. One of the main attractions of the Convention is the presentation of the individual Lion Queens. Representing the San Pedro Lions Club will be lovely Irenie Gonzalez. Irene has been a contestant for the Miss San Pedro Pageant and is the daughter of San Pedro Lion President, Ruben Gonzalez and Marcia Gonzalez. She is a fourth form student at San Pedro High School and enjoys volleyball and participating in community events. Irenie is one of the original dancers of Barbara's Dance Group. She has participated in many of the clubs' activities through her dancing abilities. Even though this year, D-59 will not have a pageant to select the District Queen, Irenie will make a presentation during the convention and will also be featured in all the activities of the convention as part of the San Pedro delegation. Miss Gonzalez will be introduced to the general public as the official queen of the San Pedro Lions Club at a special presentation/fund- raiser on April 10th, 1999.
The countdown for the Convention has begun and the San Pedro Lions Club invites all their friends to make an effort to attend. Registration should be done early. The registration fees are as follows: Lions and male guests - $30; Lionesses/auxiliaries/female guests - $25; Leos and youth - $20. The registration fee entitles you to all the activities of the Convention including some lunches. As a registered person you will have the privilege of participating in the many fun activities, most of these will be done at the San Estevan Lions Den. Besides the queen's presentation, each club will participate in the cultural presentation. The order of presentation will be as follows: Stann Creek, San Estevan, Belmopan, San Pedro and Belize City. Even though this component will not be judged this year, it is expected to be one of the best events of the convention.
Another great occurrence is the Hospitality Booth where each club gives away product and/or treats original to their area. A special trip to Progresso will also be available to those interested. The last day of the convention Lions and friends parade; competing for first and second place. Apart from the best organized group a prize goes to the best float portraying each club's theme.
The San Pedro Lions Club is preparing very hard to represent the Lions Club of our island with dignity and enthusiasm. Anyone interested in traveling with the club to San Estevan is welcome and can get information from any member of the club or visit us at the Lions Den during our weekly barbecue.
