The only question left unanswered at Monday night's Costa Maya meeting was who will be the big entertainment. The list of candidates for the International Artist was whittled down to a list of four: Laura Leon, Jose Jose, Patty Navidad, and Carlos Cuevas. It was decided by those present at the meeting to do a survey of the public to determine which artist would be best suited to entertain at this year's festival. After the results are returned and tallied, the committee will announce the artist chosen to perform.
The committee also decided to hold a public contest to solicit designs for a permanent "official logo" that will be used for each year's festival. This logo will not change from year to year and can be used for more bulk content articles such as stationery letterheads. The official logo must be small enough, approximately a two inch square, to fit on a breast pocket or sleeve of a shirt. This will be representative of the Costa Maya Festival itself. An additional theme logo that will change yearly will be featured on t-shirts, promotional material and souvenirs. The theme logo can be larger and this year will feature the Millennium or Year 2000. Entries for this contest may be submitted to Nando Trejo or Gach Guerrero at Amigo Travel no later than May 15th.
The Costa Maya Festival will be held August 17th through the 22nd this year. Co-Chairman Nando Trejo updated those attending on what has progressed since last meeting. Meetings with Minister of Tourism, Mark Espat and Hon. Ralph Fonseca produced some encouraging results. The festival will be granted 12 Belize Tourism Police to aid with security; duty exemptions for certain items will be arranged, and departure taxes for visitors will be waived in an attempt to cut costs.
Festival Nights were designated as follows: Tuesday (Pageant Night) - El Salvador, Wednesday - Guatemala, Thursday - Honduras, Friday - Mexico, and Saturday - Belize/International Night. Grand Sunday will feature local dance companies, bands and possibly a special visitor to be announced at a later date.
The committee will meet again on Monday, May 17th, 7:30 p.m. at the Paradise Hotel.
