The 1999 Costa Maya Committee held a meeting on Thursday, May 20th at the Paradise Resort to discuss plans for the upcoming Costa Maya Festival to be held August 17th - 22nd.
The big news of the evening was that Kairo a band from Mexico City, will be performing at the festival on Saturday night, which is Belize/International night. Kairo consists of three core members with six additional musicians. The committee is also looking into the possibility of booking Flashback, a band that frequently performs in Cancun, to play for Mexico night. Also on the agenda was the announcement of the contestant to represent Belize in the Costa Maya pageant. Miss Dawn Sampson of Channel 7 news, first runner-up in the Miss Belize Pageant, was scheduled to be the entrant for Belize. The San Pedro Sun has learned that she has decided not to attend the pageant, as she is preparing to represent Belize in the Miss World Pageant. Another change in this year's event is the sashing of the contestants for the pageant. It will be held in Belize City, unlike other years when the ceremony was held at Ramon's Village. The committee feels that by having the ceremony in Belize City it will give the event increased exposure and stimulate more publicity for the event.
Sponsors that have confirmed their participation in this year's festival are Bowen & Bowen and Maya Island Air. Many others businesses have expressed interest and their names will be announced shortly. Hotel sponsors that have already committed were also announced. They are: Bananas Beach Resort, Coconuts Hotel, Holiday Hotel, Mayan Princess, Playador Hotel, Paradise Resort, Ramon's Village, Royal Palm Villas, SunBreeze Hotel and Victoria House.
The Costa Maya office will once again be located downstairs, behind the Town Hall as soon as funding is approved and phone lines installed. The next meeting of the committee will be held on Thursday, June 3rd at Paradise Resort. Anyone wishing to donate money or time to the Costa Maya Festival can contact co-chairmen Eiden Salazar Jr. at Town Hall or Nando Trejo at Maya Island Air.
