Annie Nuñez - Betty Crocker of San Pedro

Annie Nuñez of Annie's Pastries

Annie Nuñez was born November 20th, 1961 in San Pedro Town. She was one of five children born to Gualberto and Tudy Nuñez, three boys and two girls. She graduated from San Pedro Roman Catholic School and grew up working in the family business, Tortilleria "El Patio." During this period she became acquainted with all her business skills and also mastered the art of cake decorating from her mother. From time to time the Nuñez's would have extra tortillas and the perfect way to make use of them would be to fry them. Labeled plastic bags were bought from Merida, Yucatan to package the chips, thus the birth of Annie's home fried tortilla chips.

In 1981, Annie married Alberto Nuñez Jr., and eventually had three sons Alberto IV (now 17), Adrian (now 15) and Andy (now 8). Annie's Chips and her cake decoration skills became very popular. This encouraged her to open a small kitchen adjacent to her home to work in. Over the years hotels, bars and others clients who knew and enjoyed Annie's tasty treats encouraged her to provide them party snacks as well, which she would do from time to time. In 1996 she made party snacks available on a regular basis. Chiles rellenos, chicken puffs, chicken and lobster dip and sausage rolls are a few of her mouth watering hors d'oeuvres she sells to the public. The town's response to her catering business was well received and Annie took a further step in her business. She now offers a full catering service for all occasions including full lunches and dinners. Special luncheons including barbecued pork chops, relleno, escabeche and more can be ordered from her every Saturday.

Annie and her staff of two also cater to recess breaks at the San Pedro High School and Island Academy. Some of their delicious snacks and pastries can also be purchased at Rock's Supermarket. She foresees expanding her business and adding a pastry display shop in the near future.

Even though she lives a busy schedule, Annie has gone back to helping her parents manage the tortilla factory business. She ended by saying, "At this point, I have everything needed to make your party or occasion very special and all this at a very low cost. I invite interested people to come by and sample the wide variety of party snacks I offer." Her cakes (for all occasions), homemade tortilla chips and party snacks, like Annie, are truly number one.
