Few are the people that possess multi-talents. People tend to stick to only a couple of goals in their life. In San Pedro we are lucky that this is not so. This week, Our Community will feature a gentleman who has been very active in sports, social activities, non-profit organizations, the development of San Pedro and the management of our Town Board. We speak of no other than Mr. Ruben Gonzalez.
Born in San Pedro on May 26th, 1960, he attended San Pedro R.C. School and then St. John's High School and College in Belize City where he graduated in 1979. Following graduation, he joined his brothers for a period of approximately three months doing commercial fishing on their sailboat. Even though this was a satisfactory occupation, Ruben felt his education was being wasted so he sought another job opportunity. His first office job was with the Belize Electricity Board where he was in charge of general office work and bookkeeping. His ambition was soon visible and he accepted a job as an accountant at Caribeña Producers Co-operative. Soon after he commenced his job there, he was promoted to a managerial position which he performed to the best of his abilities for fourteen years.
On February 28th, 1992, Ruben married Marcia Nuñez and today they have three children Irenie, Marcita and Ruben Jr.
Ruben left Caribeña Producers in 1994 after he was offered the prestigious job of Town Clerk. He has undertaken this position, like previous jobs, with much dedication and dignity. He has numerous responsibilities on his shoulders with this job; namely collecting revenues, supervision of office staff and overall administration of the Town Board's office. He is also responsible to the Mayor and Town Councilors. He has proven himself very reliable and efficient thus keeping his position up to the present.
His ambition to serve the community does not only end at his capacity as Town Clerk. He also joined the San Pedro Lions Club thirteen years ago and has been very active since day one. He has served on the Board of Directors, held the secretary position for two concurrent years and was president during the year 1998 -1999. He is presently the Cabinet Secretary of the entire Lions Clubs of Belize. In 1995 he hosted members from abroad on two occasions while he was part of the Friendship Force Worldwide Organization. Unfortunately this organization is no longer in existence in Belize, despite his strong efforts to keep it alive. Another time of the year that Ruben makes himself very visible is during Carnaval. Since he was a youth, he enjoyed taking part in this three-day celebration, both in painting and the comparsas. He was a very active participant with the "Barbies" and last year with "Re-encuentro Carnavaleño", the Lion Club members who reunited to dance carnaval.
When we speak about sports, you name it, he has done it. He especially enjoys softball and football. He has been involved with the San Pedro Football Club serving as secretary in 1996 and is presently a member of the board and assistant treasurer. In the past, he played with the San Pedro Selection Team competing in Belize City and presently plays with the San Pedro Veterans Team. Ruben tries to be involved in as many organizations as he possibly can. He believes that if he can "add his little grain of sand" to make this place a better one to live, he is satisfied. He also sits on the Board of Directors for the newly formed Saga Society, the Hol Chan Advisory Board, the Trade Licensing Board, San Pedro Liquor Licensing Board, Traffic Committee and the Product Development Committee. You might think this takes all of Ruben's time. It almost does, but he has also made time to open a small grocery store with his wife which they both administer.
Ruben has proven that life is what you want it to be and there is always time for more, if you make the time. He looks forward to his work everyday and enjoys being part of the many committees he is involved with. The people of San Pedro appreciate the dedication and great skills of this multi-talented personality in Our Community.
