On Monday, January 18th, the Ambergris Historical Society and the Carnival Committee joined together to organize Carnival '99. This year promises to be one to remember.
The festivities will kick off on Saturday, February 13th, 1999, with a Grand Carnival and Valentine Bazaar. There will be games such as Tombola, Fish Pond, Ring Toss, Bucket Toss, etc. There will also be lots to eat and drink. The music will be provided by local bands. The highlight of the evening will be the crowning of Miss Carnival '99. This will be a popularity contest in which everyone is invited to participate, by voting for their favorite contestant. All proceeds from this event will go towards assisting the Ambergris Museum in meeting its operational expenses for the upcoming year.
On Sunday, February 14th, painting will be allowed all day. Group comparsas are encouraged to begin from Sunday. At 6:00 p.m. the Carnival Parade, honoring Miss Carnival '99 will take place. All schools, dance groups, businesses or any person, can take part in this first ever parade. A Carnival Show will follow, and this will take place at Central Park. Local dance groups will be invited to perform.
On Monday and Tuesday, painting will be allowed all day. Group comparsas will continue. On Tuesday, the now famous PAINTED PERSONS ONLY PARADE will take place at about 6:30 p.m. in the evening. The winners of the best comparsas in different categories, will be announced at Central Park.
The next meeting of the committee, will be held on Monday, January 25th, 7:30 p.m. at the town hall. Anyone willing to be part of the committee is invited to attend. The San Pedro Sun will have a weekly update on Carnival '99.
