Sunday, February 7th, 1999 was the day San Pedro Lions Club set aside as a grand fundraiser assisting Lions Club International Foundation (L.C.I.F.). The official motto "We Serve" was reflected in the actions of many.
L.C.I.F. Chairman, Lion Severo Guerrero and his committee organized an
all day barbecue at the Lion's Den with entertainment by local musicians and
dancers. The town's response to the fundraiser was greater than ever, as
many friends and visitors gathered at the Lions Den for lunch and to
contribute towards this worthy cause. All funds raised during the day will
be sent to L.C.I.F as a donation from the San Pedro Lions Club. L.C.I.F. is
the charitable arm of Lions Club International. It uses donations from their
many projects to meet vital worldwide needs beyond the reasonable
capabilities of local Lions acting alone. It is a public, non-profit,
tax-exempt corporation that provides, through contributions of Lions,
Lionesses and Leos, as well as non-Lions, millions of dollars to programs
for the needy.
Early birds came to the Lions Den to pick up their lunch starting at 10:30 a.m. Great performances by Barbara Alfonso's Dance Group entertained with various dance selections that delighted the gathering. The San Pedro Dance Company's senior group also made a special appearance. This was followed by the ever-popular Wil Nuñez and Dale Wallace of Wil and Friends who immediately put everyone in the dancing mood. After their two hour performance, Tim Budd and Celeste Phillips changed the pace with their American Pop renditions. This was a one-of-a-kind performance.
The Lions Roar was heard by many. In addition, donations were made to the Colombian Relief Effort, in light of the recent earthquake that dramatically affected that country. The San Pedro Lions Club would like to express their sincere thanks to all that supported this cause, specifically Wil Nuñez, Dale Wallace, Frank Nuñez, Tim Budd, Celeste Phillips, Barbara Alfonso Brown and her dance group, The San Pedro Dance Company, Virginia Wallace, Mr. Chi, Captain Morgan's visiting group and John Crawford from Bushmaster Rentals. Anonymous donations were also received. Special thanks to you too.
Talking with Lion Severo Guerrero during the festivities he told the San Pedro Sun, "I encourage the community's participation in events such as this one and also encourage people to join the Lions Club. These types of fundraisers make a huge difference to a person in need and being part of it is self-rewarding."
