Mooring buoys installed at Shark Ray Alley and Bacalar
Chico Marine Reserve
Press Release - August 27, 1997, Hol Chan Marine Reserve - On August 21,
1997, three mooring buoys were installed in the Bacalar Chico Marine
Reserve in the Bill Heusner Channel by the Fisheries Department and the
Bacalar Chico staff.
On August 22, 1997, six mooring buoys were installed at Shark Ray
Alley by the Fisheries Department and the Hol Chan Staff. It is expected
that Shark Ray Alley will de designated zone "D" of the Hol Chan Marine
Reserve by the next tourist season. These buoys are part of Fisheries
Department mandate to implement a National Mooring Program. All mooring
buoys installed will have to be first approved by the Fisheries
Department. This National Buoys System comprises of a special coding
system dependent on vessel tonnage.
Raleigh Expedition builds ranger station and jetty at
Bacalar Chico
Press Release - August 27, 1997, Hol Chan Marine Reserve - Bacalar Chico
National Park Marine Reserve inaugurated a new ranger's quarters and
jetty on Tuesday August 26, 1997. On hand for the occasion were the
British High Commissioner, Government officials and members of the
community and staff of the reserves. During the ceremony it was
emphasized that this new building(on the eastern side of the island)
will play an important role in enforcement and research within the area.
A permanent ranger will be stationed in the newly built house. This
will improve the patrol of the area, therefore discouraging illegal
fishing.
The Ranger's Quarters and jetty were built by the Raleigh Expedition
members over a five week period. Funds were provided by the British High
Commissioner. The final phase of activity for the Raleigh Expedition at
Bacalar Chico National Park Marine Reserve will be building a watch
tower.
