Candice Chavannes Grasps Glory for S.P.R.C.S.

Candice Chavannes
On March 20 representatives from three schools of the Belize District met to compete for the honor of representing Zone 5 in the Belize District Finals for the National Coca-Cola Spelling Bee. Caye Caulker R.C. School was represented by Nadine Lopez of Standard VI and Abigail Martinez of Standard V. Island Academy was represented by Kristi Gonzalez and Rhiannon Greif both from Standard V. San Pedro R.C. was represented by Candice Chavannes and Edgar Aceituno both of Standard IV.

All of the students competed in three rounds. Each of these rounds consisted of three words for each contestant. Nearing the end of the third round the competition became fierce. Rhiannon Greif, Nadine Lopez and Candice Chavannes had each spelled seven out of eight possible words. At the end of the third round only Nadine Lopez and Candice Chavannes were able to continue on to the fourth round. The fourth round consisted of two words for each contestant from a reserve list that neither girls had previously seen. Nadine Lopez took an early lead after she spelled the first word correctly and Candice Chavannes misspelled her word. However, Miss Lopez spelled her next word incorrectly and Miss Chavannes was able to correctly spell her word. With the score tied going into the sixth round both young ladies seemed a bit apprehensive about the difficult words on the reserve list. Both girls misspelled the first word. Miss Lopez then misspelled her word. Miss Chavannes clinched first place with the correct spelling of "launch". Miss Lopez won 2 cases of assorted soft drinks from Bowen and Bowen. Miss Chavannes won 3 cases of assorted soft drinks from Bowen and Bowen.

The District Finals will be held on April 14 in Belize City and Candice will represent Zone 5 at the competition. In the event that she is unable to attend the competition, Nadine Lopez will represent Zone 5 at the finals. The District Finals will be attended by all the Belize District Zone winners and promises to be a hotly contested event.

Congratulations to all of the students on a job well done.
