On March 22nd San Pedro's Central Park was packed with anxious spectators waiting to witness the selection of Miss Chiquitita 1997-98.

The competition was covered live by Estero Tu y Yo. The Masters of Ceremonies were Mr. Albino Sanchez of Estero Tu y Yo and Mr. Angel Nuñez. There were seven judges; Margaret Nuñez, Barbara Alfonso Ramos, Nereyda Borga, Tessie Duran Tonaco, Susan Breton, Marge Branger and Marge Askew.

The eight lovely contestants - Laura Ashley Paz, Aracely Garay, Cindi Escarlet Delgado, Yanine Ruiz, Nailea Martinez, Sully Marin, Yanira Michelle Torres and Kiana Cobá - modeled their bathing suits and introduced themselves to the panel of judges and the audience. They performed a Brazilian dance to entertain the audience and were joined by several other girls who volunteered to be a part of the festive and colourful dance. The contestants performed in their own vibrant manner. The audience especially loved Miss Laura Ashley Paz' performance, which involved much shaking and twisting.

The evening gown competition was the last round of competition. The girls were escorted on stage by eight cute little boys who were dressed in tuxedos. The judges were asked to give their final scores and the points were tallied.

Before Miss Chiquitita was announced Miss Talent was chosen. The audience was asked to applaud according to how much they enjoyed each contestant's performance. Miss Lara Ashley Paz was chosen as Miss Talent. Miss Cindi Escarlet Delgado was the most popular among the contestants and was chosen as Miss Amity. Miss Photogenic was awarded to Miss Sully Marin.

Miss Chiquitita 1997-98 was awarded to the lovely Miss Yanine Ruiz. The four year old was sponsored by Cottage Gift Shop. Each contestant received a prize and a little tiara for participating in the contest.
