Independence Day Activities

In 1981, 15 years ago, Belize gained its long awaited Independence. Every year since that 21st day of September Belizeans everywhere have looked forward to celebrating their country's Birthday.

The people of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye are great celebrators of this country's birth. The San Pedro Town Board has put together a festive series of activities for the community during the week leading up to September 21, 1996. On Wednesday, September 18, the annual Spelling Bee Contest was held at the Lions Den. On Thursday, September 19, a Social Studies Contest was also held at the Lions Den. The annual September Celebrations would not have been complete without the Children's Rally which took place on Friday, September 20, at the Lions Den. On the evening of the 20th at 9:00 p.m. there will be live music at Central Park to entertain spectators up until the Midnight Ceremonies. The Midnight Ceremonies will entail speeches from invited quests, the flag raising, the military gun salute done by the Belize Defence Force and a grand display of fire works. After the Midnight Ceremonies there will be a "Jump up" with two local bands, Memo and Wil and The Caribbean Shells. On Saturday, September 21, starting at about 11:00 a.m. the annual Uniform Parade will proceed through the streets of San Pedro Town. Following the Uniform Parade the afternoon will be filled with many fun sporting activities for adults and children at Central Park. The games will carry on into the evening and will be followed by music and dancing. San Pedro Town Clerk Ruben Gonzalez, who is a member of the September Celebrations committee encourages everyone to participate in the Uniform Parade on Saturday, September 21, 1996.
