Legendary Texas songwriter/singer Jerry Jeff Walker chose San Pedro as the place to record his latest album. The recording includes songs about Belize and promotes the atmosphere of island life. Walker earned his place in musical history as the author of the song, "Mr. Bojangles." Some of his other hits like "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother," and "Pissing In the Wind," are almost as well known.

Walker visited Belize in the early 90's and fell in love with the ambiance. He now owns a house on the island and is a familiar figure to San Pedranos because of the numerous benefit shows he has performed.

"I wanted to record this album live," he said, "and try to catch some of the atmosphere on tape. We're thinking of calling the album Barefootin' and that is one of the songs we'll be recording."

On Wednesday, August 6th, recording began at Victoria House. The dining room was packed with Jerry Jeff Walker Fan Club members, invited guests and the Gonzo Band's instruments. The band's long-time members include John Inmon on lead guitar, Bob Livingston, bass, Freddy Krc, the drummer, and Lloyd Maines, who plays rhythm guitar and steel guitar.

Six songs were recorded during the Wednesday session, including "Just Another Gringo in Belize," by local singer/songwriter Dennis Wolfe. On Saturday at Fido's Courtyard a daytime session recorded two songs and was photographed for a music video by Kevin Keith of Showman Productions and San Pedro's Joe Miller of Joe Miller Photography. The remainder of the songs were recorded at Walker's home. The tapes will be "sweetened" at a studio in the U.S. and the release is planned before Christmas of this year.
