St. Matthews University School of Medicine, after a two year building programme starting in September/October of this year, will represent a $15 million dollar investment in the physical plant of the school, according to local contact Seferino Paz, Jr.

The exact location of the school will be known in a few weeks. Two seaside sites are under consideration, both south of Victoria House. As reported last week in The San Pedro Sun, The school will be open this fall utilizing temporary buildings located at Mar de Tumbo. The construction of the permanent campus, including administration buildings, lecture halls, computer rooms, library, restaurant and 100 two bedroom apartments will take two years. More details regarding financing and construction will be available in a few weeks. The faculty for the institution is in line, with at least 6 U.S. board certified professors and over 50 support staff, including administration, restaurant, apartments, grounds, etc. At least 90% of the positions will be manned by Belizeans. Currently, there is an office in the United States working on the final touches of the creation of the school.

Students, who will have already received a pre-med degree, will undergo a four year programme prior to receiving their medical doctor degrees. Residency will then be completed in the States or countries such as Ireland. Non-Belizean graduates will not be allowed to practice in Belize.

St. Matthews will be run by a board of directors which will include the investors and a number of locals.
