On Friday night, September 5th, locals and tourists crowded the pool side of Ramon's Village to witness the opening ceremonies of the September celebrations and the official sashing of the Miss San Pedro 1997/98 participants.

Master of Ceremonies, Angel Nuñez, welcomed the gathering and introduced Deon Armstrong who sang the national anthem. His Worship Mayor Alberto Nuñez opened the evening's ceremonies. Mayor Nuñez gave a brief history of the country, the log wood cutting era and the importance of St. George's Caye to the early settlers of British Honduras. He continued to tell of the battle at St. George's Caye and its historical significance. Mayor Nuñez concluded by making an appeal to all Belizeans to "preserve their Belize, the jewel of Central American and the Caribbean."

Miss San Pedro participants were escorted by their sponsor or by a representative of their sponsor. Mr. Juan Vorado, the General Manager of Nova Shrimp, escorted Miss Janilie Lizama; Mr. Simon Harmouche, owner of San Pedro Hardware, escorted Miss Nelay Perez; Mr. Simone Neal, most valuable employee of Graniel's Cabinet Shop, escorted Miss Sandra Gutiérrez and Mr. Ramon Nuñez of Ramon's Village escorted Miss Vanya Vasquez. Each contestant gave a short greeting and was sashed by their escorts.

The ceremony ended with a vote of thanks by Mandy Castillo. The four contests dined at the pool side at Ramon's Village and enjoyed music provided by members of the Sea Shells and Turtle Shell band.
