Sixteen years ago, on September 21, 1981, Belize gained its Independence. Belizeans countrywide look forward to celebrating the country's birthday. The San Pedro Town Board has planned two weeks of activities for the community to commemorate and celebrate September 10, the Battle of St. George's Caye and Independence Day September 21.
Festivities begin with Children's Day on September 5. At 1:30 p.m. there will be a parade of the school children through the streets of San Pedro. The parade begins at Central Park and will be followed by a Jump Up with music by the San Pedro High School Band. Later on Friday night the official sashing of the four contestants vying for the title of Miss San Pedro 1997-98 will take place at Ramon's Village at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, September 6 is Teen Explosion Night. A Disco at the Lions Den will take place at 8:30 p.m. On Tuesday, September 9, a Children's Talent Show will be held in Central Park at 7:30 p.m.
On September 10, St. George's Caye Day festivities will begin at Central Park with Official Ceremonies. After the ceremonies a carnival parade with floats and dancers will take place through the streets of town. The parade will be followed by an all day Jump Up at Central Park with music by the San Pedro High School Band and Lichie's Box.
September 12 is High School Night. The program will take place at the old football field.
September 14 will be a day of prayer celebrated in all churches.
September 19, Friday night, the Miss San Pedro Pageant will take place on the stage at the football field. The pageant will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by a dance featuring the One World Band from San Ignacio. Click here for more information about the pageant.
September 20 the festivities will begin at Central Park with an All Night Variety Show. A torch ceremony and flag raising ceremony will take place at midnight.
September 21 - Independence Day - The official ceremonies will take place at Central Park. Following the speeches, Miss San Pedro will be crowned and escorted to her float to preside over the parade through town. The parade will be a combined parade featuring floats, dancers and uniformed participants. An all day Jump Up with music by Wil and the Caribbean Shells and the San Pedro High School Band will take place at Central Park.
