The room occupancy rates declined from 31% in 1995 to 29% for the first 9 months of 1996. Belize District is the only area that experienced an increase (3%) from 1995 to 1996 while Placencia recorded a 9% decline in its occupancy rate.
There is one increase that was recorded in all districts. Hotel room revenue was reported at BZ$27,315,516. This indicates a 2.7% increase over a similar period in 1995. This increase in revenue can be accounted to an increase in room rates. Room rates averaged $128.40 for the first 9 months of 1996, up from $113.35 during this time period in 1995. This increase occurred in all areas of the country with Ambergris Caye showing the most dramatic increase from $180.92 to $201.44. The vast majority of the other destinations had an increase ranging from approximately $11 (Belize District) down to $1 (Cayo District). The only area showing a decrease in room rates was Corozal. According to Mr. Aldana, "This increase in room rates accounts for the reported increase in room revenue despite the reported fall in tourist arrivals and room occupancy rates."
