Los Unicornios to perform on Guatemala Night at Sea & Air

Los Unicornios of Guatemala

by Dorian Nuñez

The Sea and Air Festival will boast two great performers for Guatemala Night, August 22. Los Unicornios, one of Guatemala's most popular bands and El Ballet Moderno y Folklorico de Guatemala will be presenting the best of Guatemalan music and cultural dances.

Los Unicornios are not strangers to Belize. They have performed many times at the Bellevue Hotel, Memorial Park in Belize City for September celebrations and others occasions. Los Unicornios have a unique rumba/flamenco style in which they incorporate other styles like Caribbean and Cuban music. Members of Los Unicornios are not full time professional musicians, most of the time they perform upon request at special events and at invited festivities; they enjoy playing as a hobby.

El Ballet Moderno y Folklorico de Guatemala was founded in 1964. One of its main objective is the diffusion of traditional Guatemalan music and dance as well as the practice and development of modern dance in its different styles. Since its foundation, the group has participated in important events and festivities at the national level and has obtained status as an artistic ambassador for Guatemala. The group had traveled and performed in Europe, North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. They recently participated in the II Taller Festival International de Danzas Folkloricas in Havana, Cuba.

In a conversation with, Mr. Antonio Castellanos, Ambassador of Guatemala, he expressed his delight that Guatemala has been able to participate in the Sea and Air Festival all these years, and is very confident that the performers of this year will put on a great presentation for the people of Belize and its visitors.

"The Sea and Air Festival is a great opportunity for the Mundo Maya countries to come together as a big family," said Mr. Castellanos. "It gives Guatemala a chance to build a greater friendship with Belize, and with the other participating countries, through music and dance." He said that it was an excellent promotion for tourism for all the 5 countries and an excellent way in which each individual and unique culture, art and music can diffuse throughout these 5 countries His only concern is that very little promotion is being carried out in the 4 other participating Mundo Maya countries. He believes that further promotion would very much increase the popularity of the festival and that many more people from these countries would be attending the festival.

Tickets for the Sea and Air Festival will be available next week at the Sea and Air office. Tickets at the gate will be $20.00 a night for adults and $10.00 for kids 5 to 12 years old. Six Day Passes are $80.00 for adults and will include Belize Caribbean Night (a saving of $40.00) and $35.00 for kids (a saving of $25.00). This years entertainment is sensational.
