World Environment Day June 5th

Belize Barrier Reef World Heritage Site ceremonies to be held

Press Release - Green Reef - May 27, 1997 -

On the 5th of June, every year, the Global community comes together to celebrate World Environment Day. World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to focus global attention on environmental action and awareness every 5 June. All activities commemorating this annual event in 1997 will be organized under the theme "For Life on Earth."

Green Reef will host the inaugural ceremonies commemorating the World Heritage Sites, in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. A myriad of activities have been planned to mark this occasion, however, the highlight of the main event will be the unveiling of the plaque for the acceptance of the nomination of the Belize Barrier Reef System as a World Heritage Site.

Other activities include a street parade, television documentaries on coral reefs, photo exhibitions and displays, essay and poster competitions in schools, poems and skits performed by school children and clean-up campaigns.

Let us not wait for the 5th of June to commit ourselves to the protection of the Environment. Let us make every day World Environment Day!
