International Year of the Reef conference to be held at Journey's End

Journey's End Resort on Ambergris Caye is hosting the conference for the International Year of the Reef (IYOR) organization from June 22 to June 26. The conference, which includes workshops and seminars, is geared for both the sport diver and for the non-diver. A variety of marine biologists, geologists, zoologists and marine related speakers have been scheduled to speak. Guests will participate in three days of diving research, working with these world renowned coral reef scientists. For non-divers and children there are field trips and educational seminars.

REEF CHECK is an International Project being conducted at reef sites throughout the world during June, July and August. The main focus of REEF CHECK is to evaluate the health of the world's reefs and to increase individual awareness of their importance. Data collected will be submitted to Dr. Gregor Hodgson at the Institute for the Environment and Sustainable Development Research Center, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clearwater Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The data collected will encompass the evaluation of coral health and fish diversity.

All of those involved in Belize conservation are invited to attend one day of seminars at no charge. This includes any lectures by guest speakers on Journey's End Resort grounds Monday, June 23, Tuesday, June 24, or Wednesday, June 25, 1997. To confirm, attendance registration must be made by June 1. Due to space available there will be no late registrations or registrations at the door. This does not include accommodations, meals, diving, field trips by boat or transportation to or from the resort.

Attending members of the press from the United States that have been confirmed are KHOU, CBS TV of Houston, Texas, Skin Diver Magazine, GCCA TIDE magazine and the Houston Chronicle.
