| Caulker and Gales Point went to the special
polls and voted for their choice of candidate to be standard bearer for
Belize Rural South.
In San Pedro, the voting was supervised by Belize City
Mayor José Coye, Mark Espat, Delores Balderamos-Garcia and the Honourable
Johnny Briceño. Voting was conducted from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. At
approximately 5:30 P.M., the results were announced. Patty Arceo won with a
vote of 702 to 280. In San Pedro the count was 461 to 217. In Caye Caulker,
163 to 5 and in Gales Point, 78 to 58.
Both candidates had previously promised to support the winner. Baldemar
Graniel confirmed this after the election. The opposition People's United
Party is gearing up for town board elections in March of 1997 and national
elections in 1998. Last Sunday's election was to determine who would be the
PUP candidate for Belize Rural South Area Representative for the 1998
national election. Belize Rural South covers the islands of Ambergris Caye,
Caye Caulker and the mainland community of Gales Point Manatee. |
