Tourism Numbers Up Despite Keith

Press Release-Multi-Media-November 9, 2000- The Belize Tourism Board has been working arduusly to counteract any effects on tourism after Hurricane Keith. "Our Marketing Communications Plan is being intensified to ensure that cancellations for the season are minimized," commented Tracy Taegar, Director of Tourism. Statistics for October 2000 report that there was a 30% decrease in tourist arrivals at the PGIA (International Airport) in comparison to October 1999 figures. Yet, overall figures for January through October remain high with a 17.9% increase over 1999. This represents a total of 15,813 more tourists for this period.

"A momentary drop in tourist figures is to be expected immediately following a hurricane," comments Hon. Mark Espat, Minister of Tourism. "But we are confident that figures should be back up for the upcoming tourist season. In fact, arrival figures at the PGIA for the first six days in November are positive, when compared to the same period in 1999. Even though it is only a 1% increase so far, it is a good indication that we will see more positive results by the end of the month as we approach the high season."

As part of its ongoing campaign to address the impact Keith had on arrivals for October, the Belize Tourism Board has placed four full page ads in Travel Agent and Travel Weekly Magazines to promote the message "Belize as Usual" to the travel trade. In addition to many other international public relations efforts, a press briefing was held in New York on October 18 with presentations by Minister Mark Espat and Director of Tourism Tracy Teager. Efforts are ongoing and the minister is expected to conduct a satellite media tour, with interviews being broadcasted via satellite to various media houses, in early December.
