100 best students to planetarium

In a similar fashion to Santa, the Mexican Embassy is also making a list and checking it twice. But instead of who's naughty or nice, the Embassy is looking for the brightest and the best to visit the new Yook ol Kaab Planetarium and the Museum of the Maya Culture in Quintana Roo. According to Marcelino Miranda, Press Officer for the Embassy of Mexico, the embassy will select one hundred of the best Belizean students to take on an educational and impressive tour across the border.

Marcelino Miranda, Press Officer, Embassy of Mexico

"This trip is going to be completely free of cost and will be run by the Mexican embassy. It will include transportation, food and the entrance and guided tours to the planetarium and to the museum. That is the reasons we are asking all schools to nominate their best students."

Jose Sanchez

"That's what I was going to ask. How do you select the best?"

Marcelino Miranda

"Yes we are going to select with the schools. We are asking the schools to nominate their best students born between 1998 and 2001 to send those there with the special format that the Mexican Embassy is providing. And then we are going to run two public draws to select the hundred students. This is going to be a very good opportunity to go to the new planetarium. This planetarium was recently opened in Chetumal. It has the best and latest in technology in terms of planetariums and also the main purpose of this trip is to encourage students to learn more and to study more about science, about astronomy, mathematics and also about the Mayan culture. We think that the students are going to be the future scientists of this country and it is very important to encourage them to know more about these fields."

Jose Sanchez

"Based on the age range, you are targeting primary schools?"

Marcelino Miranda

"Yes. Basically it is roughly between ten and thirteen year olds. So it is going to be very important for the schools to contact the Mexican embassy and to send the nominations with the special format-it is very simple. They can get those formats from the Mexican embassy and we are expecting to have those hundred of the best Belizean students to Chetumal."

The trip will be on Thursday, December fifteenth. Schools that are interested in entering the draw must apply by two p.m. on December second.
