Everyone take note. Tourist season is upon us and the criminal element of the island is showing its ugly face. My son was mugged and robbed Saturday night just south of town. He was beat up pretty bad and the thieves made off with his wallet, cell phone, and clothes (minus shorts.) We reported this and the police said that there was a rash of burglaries and muggings over the weekend. Be careful.

Where down south?

What time of night?

On the street or the beach?

Was he alone or with friends?

Is he a local or a tourist?

Thanks for the answers.

That's v sad. Sounds like crime has really taken an upswing in AC lately. Anyone know how many police are employed there?

I never felt comfortable walking around without my boyfriend at night. I don't know if I was just being paranoid, but either way, we never allowed that to happen.

Amanda, The mugging took place on the beach just south of BC's around 10:45 on Saturday. Troy was walking alone to meet up with friends, but there were people everywhere up and down that stretch. In fact, a couple walked by during the act and thought that they were just fighting. I guess you would say that my son is a local-tourist. He's been here for about 6 months helping me with a few projects. He goes back to NYU next week. He jokes about going back to where its safe-NYC!!

kristykins, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you! It's common sense for a woman not to walk around alone at night, and two people should still be careful where they go.

Is it terrible that the people just walked by? Or does Troy feel like they couldn't have known?

Vexing!

I had a feeling it was just south of BCs.

Such a dark spot.

Hopefully a call into Insp. Sabal can help put a light(s) in that area. I will keep you posted.

I agree that its very dark down there. On our Monday night beach walk over to Crazy Kanuks, there were a few points where I mentioned we should have brought our flashlight with us.

SIN, actually it was a little further south. The other side of O'Farrell, but dark none the less.

Thank you for the clarification. Quite a distance between Belizean Reef/The Palms/Ramons and O'Farrell/Yacht Club. There's a very noticable low traffic/low lighting area around Carribean Villas...Safe to say it was most assuredly away from town...awful experience...makes walking back from town to Banana Beach much less desirable...

I was mugged just south of BC's over 10 years ago. Luckily we weren't beaten up, but we were threatened with a machete.

Now I only walk the beach at night from BC's to Fido's and back - before midnight!

I take Pedro1's advice now and take a cab.

Our crime rate is very unfortunate and even when you live in Paradise you have to be aware of your surroundings and make intelligent decisions when wandering around in dark areas.

It is a crying shame - but a sad part of life.

Hopefully your son will be healed before he goes back to the real world.

We will be arriving next week, staying at Mata Rocks. Is it safe to take the golf cart to town at night, or do we need to cab it back and forth?

It's really sad that we have to worry about all this, when I'm sitting here in Houston wishing that I was there in San Pedro...
