I am trying to get a feel for what monthly expenses are like living in the cayes. Not living like a tourist and eating out every night, but cooking at home some and going out occasionally. I'm talking about the stuff one would normally buy up here in the grocery store, food, paper products, some soaps and toiletries, etc. Not the alcohol bill. hahaha

I'm trying to figure out a realistic budget and need your help.

Thanks.

for one person, and a fairly little person like me, i can eat for about $300 belize a month from the grocery store. this includes "luxuries" like bagels, cheese, sour cream etc.this does NOT include eating out or alcohol.
Pretty much on par with the states for me.

We spend about 20% more then we do in the States. It would be a lot more if we shopped at Island supermarket.

Another thought on monthly costs. We spend a lot less money on all other items, because there is no Walmart, target, ect. There is no stopping in Target for shampoo and leaving with 18 other items. We just seem to make do with what we have while we are there. We find we spend less eatting out also, not always but most of the time. There are no $18us for two at the movies. Good music, is the cost of a drink or snack. Simple living, and we love it. Enjoy!

I think on average i spent about $500 BZE a month. Mind you it can be done a lot cheaper, but I had my cravings, and some things u just gotta buy at the island supermarket. If you shop at the local grocert stores and try to cut down on the eating out....u can do this much cheaper.

i'll agree to about 20% more than u would back home... or even roughly the same... ur first trip to the market will be the most expensive b/c u'r stocking up... otherwise its about the same as home... just be choosy with the things u buy and watch the cost b/c i wanted canned tuna and it was gonna cost i think about $8 - 10US... but otherwise it's like the same!

Shopping for two, we spend about $200BZ every Saturday for everything (Green House for produce/meats, SuperBuy for dry good/tolietries/meats and Island Supermarket for a few specialty items).

It can be done for a bit less if you stick to rice, beans and chicken.

Weekend bbq

Fantasy on saturday and John at the Beach sunday helps cut our grocery bill lol

Sometimes we travel to Ritchies or San pedro supermarket for a different shopping experience.

Otherwise we stick to the usual Big tree, Super Buy Green House and occasionally Island Supermarket.

Billy's on middle street has some decent prices as well.

I went to that bulk store http://www.santiagocastillo.com/ today with Kra-z-k and it was totally worth it either to split items with a friend and if you know your pricing for what you get elsewhere.

They also deliver.

I would recommend checking it out. Thanks Indy for getting us inspired to go there.

It's my bar bill that's a killer.......food bill about the same as the US. Tacogirl, we went to San Pedro's "Costco" last time we were there. I have to agree the prices are great!

ïżœ The fruit and vegetables here are sooo good! We call them "Ugly Carrots!" Friends who will not eat cooked
ïżœ "pretty carrots" in the states love my cooked carrots here. The same goes for Cauliflower and Broccoli. Instead of potatoes I cook rice with most of my meals.
ïżœ Fresh fruit in season can not be beaten.
ïżœ Once you have a connection with a fisherman you can get sea food at a reasonable price. I like shopping the European way - buy what you will eat today. This save so much on wasted food.
ïżœ I do not "stock up" like I did from Costco. When I moved here I gave away a walk in pantry full of food.
ïżœ The food is so good that everyone tends to eat less as it is more satisfying.

It's right down the street from the ice cream/putt putt golf place.

"But it is down the road from where they used to be. "

hah! I thought that line of reasoning belonged to Yankees when giving Jerseyites and Massholes directions.

Kraft cheese is a couple dollars cheaper there. They have a variety of lenders bagels and Sara lee pound cake & cinnamon rolls. These you do not have to buy in bulk.

Thanks Tacogirl for not inviting my to go--where are those grimlins when you need one?

Did they have my Silk Soymilk yet? I have ask them like 6 times to order me a case..........they never remember me........each time they say "Oh we are going to start carrying that people keep asking for it". I feel robbed every week when I have to go to Island Supermarket and pay 4 times what I pay in the States.

Scubalady (or anyone) any recommends on a fisherman connection??

I would like to start eating more fish / seafood and at a reasonable price.

Db

If you go on the main road south it is on the left hand side near where Loansum and SPD said (if you are heading south)

Sorry I do not have better directions lol we tool the long way there walking around south first.

If you are here and want to go I would be glad to, or if anyone wants to go for a shop there and split a few items let me know.

Indygal,
Thanks. Will let you know next time I am down and we'll go there together and if your fish connection has enough we can share that too. Nothing like fresh fish. No matter what it is it's better than anything in the store!

DB

p.s., happy holiday to you and all!
