Most of the stores in Chet are Mexican based, besides BK and McD's.

Sam's Club opened in Chetumal yesterday.

US products in Mexico based Sam's Clubs run on average 33% higher than in US based Sam's Clubs.

After purchase of course you still have to get your products across the border. More $$$ and many hassles like you can't bring in dog food without a permit. Can't bring in any juice. We have to protect the sugary products sold in Belize under the pretext of "juice".

Lots of beer from other countries available there. Again- forget about trying to bring any into Belize.

All kinds of real cheese. Can't bring that in either.

On second thought- if it weren't for protectionism in Belize a Sam's Club less than an hour away would be awesome. As it stands now it may be just more insult to injury.

990ML of Jose Cuervo Gold at Chetumal Sam's Club-$9.50 US. If you are charged the correct amount of tax at the border the bottle will then cost $21 US Belize tax included. That's right over a 100% increase in price when tax is added. Same bottle on the grocery store shelf here in San Pedro on average $35 US per bottle.

Fill up your car or boat while there too. Gas is $2.46 US a gallon compared to about $5 US a gallon in Belize.

The "variety" of soft drinks/fresh fruit drinks that is available at any supermarket in Belize is pretty dismal.

The only people protectionism in Belize is protecting are the multi-millionaires who produce the product they want to monopolise. The sad thing is, as Tim mentions above, the so-called "fruit drinks" being produced here are nothing more than sugar, artificial flavours and colouring. They really are awful.

This is a sad and accellerating trend...produce a third-rate product with slave wage labour and then bribe someone in the government to ban imports of the quality competition under the guise of "protecting Belizean jobs."

I agree, there's good fresh squeezed orange juice to be had from actual fresh oranges.

The stuff on the shelves is sugar sweetened, even the "Big H" brand.
