from a friend...
There are NO onions in the San Ignacio market right now. The last onions I bought a week or so ago were $2 a pound, and many were soft and rotting in the center. Now there is nothing. I don't know if this is due to the Marketing Board or whatever other agency could be behind it, but it is impossible to serve our regional dishes without onions! Likewise, there is a lettuce disaster. The only lettuce available is the "local" lettuce, which is about 4" in diameter and looks like something ready for the compost heap! NO whole wheat bread, NO minsa, NO cream cheese.... well, I did find cream cheese about 5 stores later, but not the rest.... life is hard enough here without having to try to figure out how to substitute for BASIC INGREDIENTS!!!!
