Wow, sounds like lots of changes to the Tulum area. I've been several times over they years - would definitely return. Really liked Xel-Ha for snorkeling. Very beautiful coves. We also stayed on Isla Mujeres, a small cool island off Cancun. Akumal used to be so quaint and beautiful. A trip to Chitzen Itza is a must.

Another great area, a bit south of Tulum on a Placencia like road, but soo soo worth it at the north part of the monst amazing biosphere on the belize/mex coast.

Just for a little unsolicited input. We had a subscription to Islands for a couple of years, and let it go. It was replaced by Carribean, which is much more suited to the area we frequent most. Also, dumped all of my dive magazines, as they were turning into nothing but advertising.
