Dont think bartending is a possibility!!! Competition with the locals, I live on Caye Caulker never has been even one gringo bartender, However you can own the bar. As far as tutoring goes, we have a good teacher here from Canada, he used to teach at a private school in San Pedro, earned $45 a day, $15 to water taxi, took home $30. He has managed to find one student here whos family has been willing to invest in home tutoring, so it dosnt seem a realistic plan!!!

Hi,
Just wondering - what about hotels? Does everyone own a hotel or resort of some sort? Can business owners rely on Belizians or employees in general while operating 1/2 the time in Belize and 1/2 the time from Canada? Is it to risky to bother?
Thanks.

Hey Canadian ...... As a rule, leaving people to handle your business rarely works no matter where they're from. Being away half the time could be worked out but better if you've got another person checking on things and perhaps if the person who is your manager makes a percentage. Size matters too. Large or small? B&B or resort-ish? I believe trust your neighbor but lock your bike. If it's easy accounting and someone is checking the books and handling your banking deposits then perhaps it could work. Off season if it's just a "break even" covering costs and maintenance might be fine if it makes good Robert Denero at peak.

What about a seasonal tour company like catamarans and snorkling? Or are there too many of these kinds of operations in place?

I would say yes, Its tough to make a go of it, upkeep on boats is very high. With so much compitition you could be asking for a bit of trouble, Its really against the odds you could ever get a guide license. You really only have 5 good months out of the year to make money, Christmas to Easter and August.

Hmmm. I see. Thanks for the tips. Just trying to brainstorm business ideas but it seems that all the bases are already covered. Are there any services on AC that locals are lacking?

You could start a consulting service advising people who are trying to come and start a business and live life in paradise what a bad idea that is. Keep copies of "Don't stop the carinval" on hand to give out as an instuction manual. smile

You know you just got to shake your head somtimes at all these folks who want to move here without really knowing the place. You really have to want to be here and the last thing that it is.is about is making money. A funny story, right after my husband and I got our residency and all that it took to do so, all our patience and yes sir and thank you, we decided to treat ourselves to a trip to Roatan, being from Hawaii I fell in love with the Place it being volcanic with Hills etc. We were at the beach and started the same conversation we had on Caye Caulker 7 years earlier, wouldnt it be great to start a business and live here, about a minute into the conversation we just started to laugh,we had just accomplished our pipe dream of making it in Belize. God knows what Honduras would have asked of us. Theres no place like home!!!
