The American Planning Association has designated the Yavapai County Courthouse, in Prescott Arizona, as one of Ten Great Public Spaces for 2008. This is along with some other unknown places:

New York City, New York, Central Park
Burlington, Vermont, Church Street Marketplace
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mellon Square
Portland, Oregon, Pioneer Courthouse Square
Santa Monica, California, Santa Monica Beach
Washington, D.C., Union Station
Charleston, South Carolina, Waterfront Park
Providence, Rhode Island, Waterplace Park
Cleveland, Ohio, West Side Market

Now. Why can I brag? The department I work for is responsible for maintaining the building and the grounds. This is a major challenge for us to maintain an operational historic courthouse and 5 acres of grounds that is
"Known as the "jewel" of downtown Prescott, Arizona. The Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza is a majestic, man-made urban forest in the heart of a historic commercial district. For more than 140 years it has served as a gathering place for celebrations, commemorations, campaign kick-offs, concerts, movies, and festivals."

During December the entire plaza is decorated and Prescott has been declared "Arizona's Christmas City"!

Take a few minutes and let me share with you:

The link has a small slide show, but I'll have to upload some shots to photobucket and link it.

Hey Gridguy, it's been awhile. I enjoyed our crawl, if you couldn't tell, and hope to share a few with you next time down. Yes, I'm heading to SP on 11/15 for just a week and working on full time.

azbob, post some more pics, please! I love old courthouses and really wish more cities and towns had kept theirs. Here's ours. I love doing trials here...

Leah-Ann, click on this link to view the Geauga County Courthouse. I've had many trials there.

Indiana has fortunately saved nearly all of their county courthouses, even when they are forced to build new ones to accommodate the needs of the county. This one is in Greensburg, Decatur County and for over a hundred years, there has been a tree growing from the roof of one of the towers

Here's one from the little town in OH where I grew up. It even has a metered hitching rail for the area's Amish population:

KLC I am so impressed! This looks like lots of Indiana courthouses! And if I wasn't such a retard, I would be able to post the pictures in here!

I really like the brick.
Placer County just built a new courthouse but they will continue to use the historic one for trials. It is really beautiful inside - working fireplaces in every courtroom.

LA, I will do. I'm trying to find my shots of the interior, especially of the one orginal courtroom with orginial seating and 20'+ high ceilings.
