This story is strictly for the birds. The Belize Audubon Society is celebrating October as the month of birds. Migratory birds from Central and South America are flying south this time of year. It's an opportunity for bird watchers throughout the country. According to Belize Audubon Society's Publicity Coordinator, it's time to pull out your binoculars.

"October is the time when birds come back to Belize. Birds migrate south when it's winter in the north. You'll notice the bird population increases in Belize. So we are using the month of October to increase the awareness of the importance of birds, and also to foster an appreciation of birds amongst Belizeans. Belize Audubon Society will be having its annual urban Birdwatch activity."

"A lot of people don't know about birds and pretty much bird-watching they would say it's for the birds. At least downtown all we see are pigeons and they seem to be a menace. How can you convince people that this is worth their while?"

"Jose, many Belizeans don't know that right now Belize is being recognized globally as an important area for birds. Belize is a part of the flyover for birds as they migrate further south to the Amazon and different parts of Central America. Just recent, Belize has been recognized as a country that is important for birds through the important bird area program which is a global program that identifies areas that are important for birds. There is a new document out on birds that we can share to all Belizeans in terms of knowledge. So wherever you go Jose, there are birds especially in Belize. There are not only pigeons in downtown Belize City; there are many birds that people don't see. So this is the opportunity for them to see what is actually in their back yard."
