Am staying near "Hamilton's" on the northside, any candid thoughts for a first-timer to Ambergris? Am particularly interested in recommendations for restaurants and bars within walking distance (I haven't seen anything about
Hamilton's on the web, does it exist?); and am also interested in how one gets to and from San Pedro at nightime (the 'ferry' across the cut doesn't go 24 hrs, or does it?). Thx much, Martin from Norcal...

Hi Martin. I have only been to AC 1 time in the past year; this info is from my experience during that time....

Haven't heard of Hamiltons so can't help you there. Rent a golf cart so you can get around; this is the only way you will be able to be on YOUR schedule if staying on the North side. I loved the seclusion and quiet of the North. The ferry is open till very late at night you just have to pay more after certain hours. When you go south on the ferry ask them how late they are open, then tell them you will pay extra money and that you WILL be coming back late that night. There are several restaurants on the North side but since I don't know where Hamiltons is can't tell you where they are in relation to you.

Hamilton's is about a 1/4 mile north of the cut, just 50 yards or so south of Sweet Basils. There are a number of dining or drinking establishments within walking distance of Hamiltons, and many more within biking distance. The ferry is open later, but you will pay a bit more for the trip.

We had lunch at Hamilton's while on AC this past September. The food was decent, but way too expensive. Part of the problem was that they don't have a lunch menu. So, we ended up ordering off the dinner menu and it was just plain pricy. The views were great, I'd consider going there again either for dinner, or if they had some cheaper options for lunch.

By the way, we walked up there from south of downtown. Yea, it's a ways, but we like to walk. I'm not sure I'd like it much at night though. I'd certainly bring a flashlight with me.

Hammock House and Palapa Bar are certainly within walking distance. Jean

The best (safest) way to get around at night is a water taxi...for you newbees the cut is about 40 ' wide, the "ferry" is about 12X12 and is a floating boat dock pulled by hand with a rope.

dexte, "rush hour" at the ferry is an experience, too!
