The Street Slaying Of The 4th Espat Male

Tonight, the Espat family in San Pedro is reeling from the loss of their loved one, 22 year-old Rolando Espat Jr. who was violently killed early on Saturday Morning. To be grieving the death of one loved one is by itself, unimaginable. For the Espat's, however, this is the fourth male in their family to be murdered, and so, the sorrow they feel is multiplied.

Today, Daniel Ortiz travelled to the Island to speak with them about the death of the man they affectionately called "Rolito". Here's his report:

Daniel Ortiz reporting
The Espat family was beside themselves with grief as yet another of their young men was murdered in cold blood.

The latest was 22 year-old Rolando Espat Jr., aka "Rolito". He was having a drink at the Jeemar's Sports Bar, a stone's throw away from his house.

That's less than 500 yards, but it didn't matter because Espat's shooter was patient and waited until he left the bar just after midnight on Friday.

He never made it home because the gunman shot him multiple times in the chest, left cheek and right upper thigh, and he collapsed here and died.

His aunt, who has lost her son, and now 3 nephews, described to us how she got the news that her fourth relative's life had been taken.

Carmita Gonzalez - Aunt of Deceased
"I was at my house sleeping when I heard my phone ringing and I receive this call that they just kill my nephew. When I got the call I ran downstairs and try to catch a taxi to go to the clinic to support my brother too. When I reach there I saw my nephew body at the back of a taxi, he was dead already."

They family doesn't know why Rolito's assailant wanted him dead, but to them, it's unimportant. All their old wounds have been torn open once again.

Seeing Rolito's body only reminded them of his cousin, 17 year old Edwardo Daniel Alamilla and his younger brother, 18 year old Charlie Espat, who were found decomposing in shallow graves in Orange Walk in June 2012. Both men were murdered and then, their bodies were dumped.

Rolito's older brother, Byron Estrada Espat, was also fatally stabbed in a bar room brawl in January of 2013.

To remember these young lives cut short - it was hard for Carmita to even discuss it with us.

Carmita Gonzalez - Aunt of Deceased
"I lost my son couple of years ago, I think all of Belize knows about that; my son, my nephew and they kill another one at Big Daddy's. We don't know what is the problem, we want justice. That all I have to say."

Daniel Ortiz
"I know that it's difficult for you reliving these things. Do you think that any of them are connected to Mr. Rolito's untimely passing?"

Carmita Gonzalez - Aunt of Deceased
"I don't know what to say about that."

Daniel Ortiz
"I know that it's hard for you guys, you have to deal with this yet a fourth time."

Carmita Gonzalez - Aunt of Deceased
"It's hard for all of us. You just can't imagine how we feel right now and the worst part is that not even my brother could be here with him because he is in a critical condition as well right now."

Daniel Ortiz
"Ma'am where do you go from here in terms of trying to rebuild that sense of security with your family with so many loses, so many young men lost?"

Carmita Gonzalez - Aunt of Deceased
"I still believe we have justice in Belize, so I think the police is doing a good job right now and I think we will have justice. I believe in that."

For Priscilla Espat, who has lost her third son, she's demanding justice.

Priscilla Espat - Mother of Deceased
"I am not afraid of them. I want justice for my son. I am not afraid. One day God will take me away, but all I want is justice."

As noted in our story, Rolando Espat's Cousin, 17 year old Daniel Alamilla and his younger brother, 18 year old Charlie Espat, were found decomposing in a very remote location in the Orange Walk District in June 2012. They went missing several days before they were found with gunshot injuries in the head. It is believed that their companions lured them to their death in a drug related killing.

Less than a year later, Rolando's older brother, Byron Espat, was killed in the bathroom of the Daddy Rock Club. He was fatally stabbed.

That brings us to this weekend when Rolando Jr. was killed a little over a year and 7 months later. To add more to the family's burden, they're dealing with Rolando Sr., his father, who is seriously ill and is hospitalized at this time.

4-time accused murderer is again on remand for murder

Gabriel Salazar, 27, who classifies himself as a fisherman of San Juan, San Pedro, was remanded on Monday, September 8, to the Belize Central Prison until November 6, on a charge of murder.

Police allege that Gabriel Salazar was the killer who shot and killed Rolando Espat, Jr., 23, of San Pedrito, San Pedro, at about 1:30 Saturday morning in San Pedrito while he was walking home after being at a club near his house.

As Espat was about 50 feet from his home, a gunman came up to him and shot him several times, at close range. The gunman then ran away and boarded a boat, which sped away.

Espat was declared dead on the scene. Police say that they saw him at the San Pedro clinic with two gunshot wounds in the chest, one in the left eye and one in the right upper thigh.

Police launched a speedy investigation that led to Gabriel Salazar, who was found in the area, and he was taken into custody that same Friday night, about 30 minutes after Espat was murdered.

Salazar was detained over the weekend and was taken to the San Pedro Magistrate's Court on Monday, where he was arraigned on the charge of murder, and was remanded to the prison.

Police believe that Espat was killed because of the ongoing drug war in San Pedro.

According to the San Pedro Sun, Espat called his mother minutes before he was shot and told her that he was being followed. Espat also called his father and told him what was happening, and his father sent a man to accompany him home, but he was attacked and killed before the man could reach him.

His mother said that Rolando is the third son she has lost due to violence. Her first son to be murdered was Charlie Espat, who was one of the two San Pedro residents found buried in a shallow grave about 50 yards off a feeder road in the Orange Walk District on June 9, 2012.

The second of her sons to be killed was Byron Estrada, who was stabbed about 22 times inside a San Pedro club on Saturday, January 26 of last year.

San Pedro police said that Rolando Espat, Jr., was no stranger to the law. Police say Rolando, his brothers and some associates are associated with one of two rival drug groups operating on northern Ambergris Caye.

Gabriel Salazar is also no stranger to the law, and is known to the police. He was one of four men who were charged for the January 29, 2009 double murder of James Swan, Jr., and Eduardo Gutierrez, whose decomposing bodies were found in a shallow grave on northern Ambergris Caye.

On May 30th, 2012, a jury found all four men, including Salazar, not guilty of the double murder.

Salazar was also under investigation for the March 13, 2010 armed robbery of the Scotia Bank branch in Spanish Lookout, Cayo, after which he went on the run for months. He was found in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, where authorities there fatally shot Alex Edwards and Benjamin Peters and seriously wounded Salazar during a robbery attempt they allegedly made in that city.

Salazar was returned to Belize to face trial for the robbery and murder of a security guard in Spanish Lookout, in connection with the bank robbery, but he was acquitted of the charges.

Gabriel Salazar later walked away again from yet another murder trial, but this time at the Dangriga Supreme Court after he was acquitted of killing Francis Johnson, a store owner of Big Falls, in the Toledo district. The murder occurred during a violent armed holdup and robbery of the store on September 9, 2009, in which the store's owner, Johnson, was shot and killed in the process.

Salazar and three other men were suspected of committing the robbery that became murder, but the three men escaped and fled the country.

Police said that their investigation led to Salazar, but he was on the run. When he was found in Honduras and returned to Belize, he was then taken to the Dangriga Supreme Court to stand trial for the death of Johnson.

It was then that he told the court that he had been beaten by police and the judge disallowed the admission made by Salazar, implicating himself as the killer, and the case against him fell apart.

Also, he was one of three men who were arrested and charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery after they allegedly shot a businesswoman in the chest on July 4 and escaped with her bag containing about $70,000 worth of jewelry.

May this scum not make it to court. As usual the court system has failed. Hopefully someone in the prison does all of Belize a favor.
