Hubby & I are bringing 4 "kids" 12 - 17. Any great ideas for them? Also, how safe is it to let them go about on their own?

My kids are 12 and 17, and their fave place in Belize (and they've been most places) is San Pedro. They like it because they can walk around town on their own, and there's enough to do and see to keep them interested.

I wouldn't want them to be out on their own at 2 in the morning or to stray into dark corners at night anytime, but as tourist areas go San Pedro is pretty safe, with just the standard precaution that a place like Ambergris Caye is a magnet for all types.

I would never let them out alone at night even at Disney World!! Great to know that they can have Some freedom in the day. As you know by the time the kids have turned to age 12 us parents have lost several IQ points and don't get any back until they are in their 20's! LOL
We are soo excited about this trip! We work to hard and need to cool our jets.

When will you be in AC? I have a 12 and 15
year old who are already whining that they
don't get to bring friends. We will be there
July 17 - 30th.

BIG difference between 12 and 17. Your 17 yr.old is right on the edge of ruling the roost, age wise. He/she will be fine, particularly if a "he". If a "she", she should venture out late only with others, as with any other location. As for the day, all ages will enjoy the freedom the reletive safety of AC provides.

For what it's worth, I feel safer on AC then I do at home. When I go to the big city I carry a handgun (um... I should probably mention I have a licence). For what I think is good reason. I can think of some places in the US where I would not feel safe except from the inside of a tank. Ambergris Caye is by comparison a very safe and happy little place.

Relax, enjoy and have a good time. Use common sense and you'll be fine.

AC is a very mellow place. I consider it one of the safest places in the Carrib in terms of street crime. I did not see one single person carrying a handgun, and I have an eye for those things.

Yes, of course, watch your children as you always do, perhaps even a tad bit more, but know that AC not a dangerous place. At least that is my opinion.
