Does the "Magic Jack" app work in Belize?

We are coming down next week and I am trying to find out if the "Magic Jack App" for smart phones works in San Pedro. Last year when we were at Banana Beach, we could finally get Skype to come on- but the picture and sound were distorted. I have an 87 year old mom- and like to call her daily to just make sure she’s doing OK. I was looking into Verizon and getting the SIMS card from them with the package for 100 minutes and asked my nephew who worked there what I should do. Instead of recommending a plan from Verizon, he told me he’s used the Magic Jack app for smart phones all over the world when he traveled and it’s free and it worked when he was in China and Australia. I just wondered if it works in Belize. I just want to have something available so I can contact her or her contact me when needed.

Yes, magicJack App works for iPhones & Androids. Outgoing call to USA & Canada possible. magicJack requires a subscription to be able to receive calls at a designated number but I receive calls now & then via the random assigned number too.

I’ve also used Viber with success. Viber to Viber is free. Viber to U.S. number is 2 cents a minute. Unfortunately BTL’s uplink speed can be dire at times so that can affect video quality on Skype etc.
