Candy Armstrong, San Pedro's new education officer.

She held a meeting last night at the San Pedro High School and introduced herself. Candy Jones Armstrong is San Pedro’s first official Education Officer assigned to San Pedro and Caye Caulker and is responsible for all education institutions ranging from Pre-school and extending all the way to Junior College.

Previously working at the Literacy Arm for the Ministry of Education, Armstrong worked arduously promoting literacy in schools around the country, expressing the importance on reading and writing initiatives by the institutions. However, Armstrong has also been an elementary school teacher and has previously taught at St. Ignatius Elementary, Guadalupe Roman Catholic School and Our Lady of the Way Elementary.

With her previous experience, Armstrong is certain she is a valuable asset to the Belize Rural South community. Her responsibilities include monitoring and supervising all educational establishments on these communities to ensure the best delivery to each and every student. San Pedro and Caye Caulker fall under the Belize District Education Center and Armstrong believes she will be a great liaison between the islands and Belize District. “Visiting the various schools, we discovered that one of their biggest concerns is the relaying of information. Information relayed between the islands and the District was not happening in a timely manner. And by having an Education Officer stationed here, this problem would not continue,” she explained. Armstrong will assist in closing the gap between the Ministry and educational institutions to overcome the many challenges that they now face.

Armstrong will not only assist in disseminating information but will also work hard in familiarizing the educational institutions on the various areas where she, as Education Officer, can help. “As part of the Ministry of Education, we are serious in ensuring that each child gets quality education. As such, we want to prepare teachers with the best tools to be able to provide the best education to all students. Collaborating together we are hoping that the schools will see us as a means of support so that the education experience can be enhanced.”

Armstrong’s office is located on the first floor of the San Pedro Town Council and since she was recently assigned, she is out conducting “spot checks” on the many schools. As such, she is available at her office between the hours of 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. To contact, Education Officer Candy Armstrong kindly call her at (666) 5285.
