The Alijua Suites is a beautiful new building, centrally located on San Pedro's Front street (now renamed Barrier Reef Drive). There are six fully equipped and comfortably decorated suites and one semi-suite. All suites have air conditioning, ceiling fans, cable TV, purified water, and full maid service. The six full suites are located on the building's second floor and each has a living area. All suites have a day bed in the living area.

The Alijua is found at the center of San Pedro, an easy stroll to the town's most popular restaurants and night spots, yet the hotel maintains a very private and serene atmosphere. The Alijua offers the town's only fourth floor garden and natural observatory. The "guests only" retreat has a bar and Bar-B-Q area, lounge chairs for sunbathing, hammocks for snoozing, and the best view of the entire island and gorgeous reef.

The ground floor of the Alijua houses gift shops, a European Bistro specializing in imported wines and liqueurs, a tropical daiquiri bar, the island's post office, a travel/rental desk, and the hotel's office and reception area.

(Editor' note - Alida Alamilla Nunez is the manager - on any given afternoon you'll find an assortment of local artists, business people, and guests, dropping into Alida's office to share and relax. Take a break and get to know Alida- amcneill)

Editor's note: I've included a picture on this page that I took on the beach across the street from the Alijua. A little girl playing in the shallows, finding treasures. No designer swim wear, but ... This picture somehow mirrors my emotional take of the Alijua, particularly of Alida herself.

The Alijua is real thing, the staff not only helps you create your vacation as you want it, booking tours and dives, but they allow you into their world if you wish to share it. There are no walls put up, tourist on one side, locals on the other. It fact, Alida has former guests call her from all over the world. They wonder how "their" room is and what the weather's like and how is everyone anyway? They check to see if their fishing hat is still on the wall in "their" room.

They call because something happens to you on this island, and at this hotel, that feels good, wholesome, and satisfying. Come and find out for yourself.
