The Lamanai Experience
The ancient Maya pyramids of Lamanai are unique in many ways and the "getting
there" is fascinating experience in itself. Lamanai was settled on the banks
of the New River Lagoon more than 3,000 years ago by they Maya and was in
continuous use until 1641. A Franciscan (Indian) church was built in 1570.
During the 1800s the British operated a sugar mill nearby and you can see
the remains even today. "LA AMA AN AYIN" means submerged crocodile and so
it is no coincidence that carvings of crocodile's features are found on the
temples and pottery of the area. You ride down the winding New River is likely
to include encounters with a rich variety of bird life, including the rare
Jabiru Stork, the largest bird in the Americas. Crocodiles, river otters
and turtles are all found in the area. Many types of flora line the waterways.

waters edge of the New River Lagoon, entreating your return. The tour includes
