I fell in LOVE with San Pedro the first time I visited the island in 1995-1996. Shortly thereafter, I moved down there to manage my brother, "Charles'" Coffee Shop better know as "Casa De Cafe,"...where one could get a great cup or coffee along with hot muffins to take along on a diving trip. This was the place to enjoy a cup of coffee and great conversation and if you like the island gossip...anyone who visited the island around this time would remember the good old coffee shop on Front Street. Unfortunately,it's no longer there but the memories remain. On a different note, "A Tip of the Hat," to my friend Marty, who has given us a fantastic, colorful and very informative website to enjoy and browse. Whenever, I am missing my beautiful island, I'd surf the website and dream a little, wishing I was there. I do visit every year for the Easter Holidays and I just can't wait to re-visit every time. I am very pleased to read about Belize where I lived and worked from 1977 to 1981. Belize and San Pedro are certainly very different now. I have a very good souvenir and nostalgia of this period of my life.

I have been on diving trips to many different places and I have to say that without a doubt this was the best trip I have EVER taken. We stayed at the Playador and it was just wonderful. The town, the people and the diving...all wonderful. It was the first place I have ever been where you feel safe and confortable. The diving...wihtout a doubt a divers paradise!!!! I loved it so much, I'll be back in October. Looking forward to the sunshine!!! Michelle

Recently visited and loved it! HIGHLY recommend ProTech Dive shop. Helped this novice diver over some hurdles. Staff experienced, new equipment, listen to your requests and made my first dive trip and great experience and something I will never forget. Looking forward to returning soon and will dive with no other shop!

I recently visited the beautiful of Ambergris Caye. I could not have been more pleased with everything-from feeling totally safe(I travelled with women), to the feeling that San Pedroans are genuinely happy to have you visit. The diving was fantastic, weather was great and I loved Motly the beach dog who adopted me for the week. I definetley will come to visit again. Thanks.

I'll be in Ambergris in May on a packaged dive trip. I would like to add a couple of days of inshore fishing. So far, the prices I've been quoted have been exorbitant, just outrageous. It's cheaper to fish the Keys. Can anyone hook me up with a reasonably priced guide. I know what I'm doing, all he has to do is supply a safe and reliable boat. Regards,js

We were there Dec 6-16th. We stayed at Belize Yacht Club on the Caye. There was alot of reconstruction going on still, but everyone was friendly. We met several people who had sustained damage from Keith. The climax of the trip was going to the Blue Hole!!! We kept track of what was gooing on through the web, we didn't know whether to cancel or not and very glad we didn't. Marty..we met you through the many e-mails you oversaw..great place!! xoxo Pam (again)

Have plans to go to San Pedro in NOV 00. We're being told that Ramon's suffered Keith damages and will be under reconstruction during NOV. Consequently we are being redirected to Tropica on the Caye. Does anyone know if they and the adjacent properties suffered damages. Will there be a great deal of reconstruction noise one to one and a half miles out of town. Placencia is being offered as an alternative, Inn at Roberts Grove. Supposedly Keith did not hit down there. Does anyone know about this place? We kind of had our hearts set on Ambergris Caye, but will change to Placencia if San Pedro is hurting!

We have visited Belize three times in our trimaran "Kailani Beachouse." Each time we grow a little more in love with San Pedro and the friendly people and laid back lifestyle. Your efforts during Keith helped a lot of people. Thanks for all your good work in keeping the communications going during your recent disaster. Next time I'm in the neighborhood it would be my pleasure to buy you a cold one.

Marty..I still say lets bottle the adrenaline you were running on! WE could be rich!!! Lovely picture of your family. My parents emailed me about these huge snakes..and then Hurricane Keith. No way was I in a hurry to visit them! But after spending a week on the board and meeting alot of WONDERFUL people, I can't wait to fly there and put faces to the names I have become close to on this board. Thanx for providing this board and working so hard in keeping everyone updated with the latest information!! I bet your kids will be glad to have their daddy back. ;-)

Marty, Thanks so much for all your hard work during Keith! My friend Tom Murphy has 300' of beachfront north of Basil Jones, and although he's been there many times, I've been lucky enough to be on the island twice. (So far) I wanted to immediately get on a plane and bring supplies in the aftermath of the storm, but reading the message board convinced me to wait a while. We always stay at Ramon's and have been so concerned about the staff and facilities. (we were on the last flight off the island before Mithch!) Hope to meet you and family one day, and oh, what's your doga name?

Hi Marty; while following your message board during "Keith" I thought I would do a little sleuthing to find out more about who you REALLY are. Ah ha! Now I know and I still can't quite figure out how you manage to stay awake and so active for so many hours! Keep up the good work and the very best of luck to you, your family, and the staff that I feel sure that you must have!

Just got back from our stay at AC. Everyone had the time of their life! I flyfished and caught lots of bonefish, and after several chances and plenty of coaching I managed to catch my first tarpon. Almost got a grand slam. I had 2 permit follow my fly but wouldn't bite. Our guide, George Bradley worked very hard to help us and put us where we could catch fish. My wife enjoyed the friendly people, the great service, and the beautiful scenery. My daughter and I went snorkeling on the Me Too and swam with the nurse sharks and rays. We stayed at Victoria House and had a splendid time. We're already planning the return trip!

Hello, I was told as a child that my Father came from Belize then known as British Honduras. He was deported from the USA as an illegal alien when I was a baby. I only have one aunt who remembers him and she called him "Duncan" I had some letters from my mother, but that was lost in a house fire ten years ago. I was hoping to maybe find my family there. I have never felt at home here in America. I have always embraced the Caribbean culture as my own. If you can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Peace and Love.

Marty....kudos to you and your staff. This site is not only huge but amazing. I spent about 8 hours today going through every detail of it, and at BTL's prices I'm sure you know how dedicated that is....LOL I can't begin to think about how much time and effort went into making this site so large. My poor little site looks like an elf....LOL...but I keep plugging along. Getting people acquainted with Belize has always been a mission of mine since my first visit in 1995. Now that I am living here, I hope that I can provide better first hand info. I just wish I had more free time to travel around!! Thanks again for the wealth of info. I'll be sure and link a lot to your site!

Hi, I recently visited San Padro and stayed at my uncle's resort down there. It is a very exciting place to stay. There are always plenty of activities to do, whether it is relaxing in the sun and working on a tan, or snorkeling with sharks and sting rays, you'll always have fun. I am 14 years old and loved it. Most people are from fast moving communities and never have time to rest, all I have to say is this is a place where time doesn't matter and you take things at your own pace. Can't wait to go back.

We have friends who stayed at Ramons Village five years ago. Their photos convinced me that Ambergris Caye is definately an Island that needed to be on my LIST of places to visit in the near future. After thoroughly devouring your WEB site I'm convinced!! My only problem now is choosing a place to stay ...www.AmbergrisCaye.com/pages/town/downtowndetail.html kept me up late more than 1 night strolling down the "streets" checking out hotels. It was REALLY fun !! Ambergris looks like the Bahamas did 30 years ago,..only BETTER. I hope to be there before this time next year. You have a very interesting website. I have never been to Ambergris and it gives you a very good idea of what to expect. I would like to know, however, if there is any kind of snorkling from the beach, as I am thinking of bringing a group of students with me and their budget cannot afford too many off shore trips. Living in Canada, just being able to swim and look at tropical fish in real life, not in an aquarium is a treat. I have been to some Brazilian beaches which were very polluted and had glass splinters in the sand. What are your beaches like?

Hello Dear Freinds in San Pedro!! This time last year I was enjoying your paradise for these 2 months. I miss you and my Ocean!! Was REALLY upset to hear that some nasty, mean -spirited folks have criticized Lori Reed and CHANGES IN LATITUDES Bn' B. If it weren't for Lori , her cozy place and great staff, I would have missed much of Belize. It is absolutlely not ture what is being said. Trouble is some folks come wanting all the comforts of home instead of a real local expereience. I say, "Stay home, folks or go waste your money in some tourist trap timeshare". But if you really want a rich experience, come to San Pedro, stay at Lori's or any other honest, cozy local place, meet Iris and Joe and Tarbaby and Tulu and Danielle and you will find friendship and satisfaction. I have made 3 visits now, brought my Mom age 82 and sent friends who arriived hot on the hells of Hurricane Mitch....ALL have found Lori's welcoming and special. So I want anyone else who has ever share Lori's hospitality to stand up and be counted!!! Hoorah!!! to a great little place....and GET Lost you fools!" to the nay-sayers!!Thanks for the chance to support a great little business. See you next trip!!

I, too, have had two opportunities to visit Belize City and San Pedro through the Army National Guard. As a member of an Engineer Unit, we built a clinic in downtown Belize City. Both trips, a couple of days were spent out at San Pedro. What an experience. I am trying to locate the name of lodging, just south of San Pedro, behind Ramon's, a little ways off the ocean. I am returning on vacation in April and any information would be helpful.

Several years ago my Army Nat'l Guard Unit and I visited Belize. We were one of 13 Nat'l Guard outfits that helped build school in Biscayne, Orange WalkTown, and Crooked Tree. I truly enjoyed meeting the people and children of Belize. and also the scouts of Orange WalkTown. Being a Girl Scout Leader myself it was interesting to know how our scouting brothers & sister to the South were doing. When I retire from construction, I would find it appealing to teach in Belize. I am looking forward to the day when I can visit Belize again. Best of health and a prosperous New Year! Francois

I really enjoyed touring your site. A most excellent job! I spent last January '99 in Belize and would have really appreciated a site like this prior to my visit...you really provide lots of info. I have since produced a CD entitled "Going Down To Belize" in which one of the songs talks about "going down to San Pedro". Wish I were going right now!!!

I love this site! I visit it at least once a week. Whilst stationed at Airport Camp in the early `90s, I nipped over to San Pedro almost every weekend to dive with the guys by the Tackle Box. It was Heaven to me, and I swore to myself I`d return again. I`m now bogged down in UK with a family and a mortgage, but there`s a secret bank account building nicely towards financing my dream. Given a lottery win, or similar, I`d be on the first plane out of here and back to Heaven. The town and diving scene seem to have changed a lot since back then, but maybe not for the worse. Loves y`all. Be back again next week for another nostalgic lookabout. Johnny.

I must say how impress I am about the progress in Belize. If the government of Belize would put a little emphasis on making the highways a little more friendlier(ie guard rails on dangerous curves, reflective lines, center lane divider etc.)I think a lot of lives would be saved. I'm an American Belizean serving in the US Army for the last 14 years, I visit my family living there annually. However, I was unable to visit this year, but plans are currently in the works for the Y2K.When I lived in Belize , I always wanted to live in the USA, right now I'm looking forward to moving back to Belize after retirement. So Ambergris Caye here I come . I love U Belize. THANKS!

My husband, son, brother-in-law, and myself are planing a trip to Belize the end of February. I was wondering what the conditions of the roads to the various ruins are like and if it is advisable to rent a car or better to book a tour? Also, what is the average water temperature in February? We are very excited about visiting Belize and Ambergris Caye. We'll be staying on the Caye for the whole week. Thanks for your help. Sally

I USE TO LIVE IN SAN PEDRO AND I KNOW THAT IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND IN THE CARIBBEAN THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. I WAS GLAD TO SEE THAT SOMEONE TOOK THE TIME TO INFORM OTHER PEOPLE ABOUT IT AND IT'S COMMUNITY. I HOPE TO BE GOING BACK THERE SOON. I HOPE!!!! GREETING FROM MEXICO. I HAVE ONLY ONE SUGGESTION. IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE SOME OF THE LOCAL'S FACES ON THE INTERNET SO THAT PEOPLE COULD HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT THE POEPLE IN SAN PEDRO AND BELIZE LOOK LIKE. THE REAL LOCALS.

Great idea Cyndy, we have just (due to your idea) put a new section up called "FACES & PLACES OF SAN PEDRO". There are a few scenics of the mainland, but most of the pictures are of the island and people of Ambergris Caye. Click Here to see them. All pictures by Kay Scott, she does fabulous work. Thanks again for the idea,

The reason we picked Ambergris Caye for our vacation was because of this web site. It had ton's of info and answered all of our questions. It's great to get first hand feed back from people who have been there. It's nice to see menus and not have to guess at what it's going to cost you to eat. I can't say enough about how great this site was. I didn't have to rely on a travel agent (who may or may not know) to find that great place to stay.

We will be returning to Ambergris Caye in April for our 4th or 5th or 6th trip...I lost count. We LOVE it. Actually we loved it so much we bought property there and plan to retire there in a short while. If you are a bit aprehensive about what it is like...just come see for yourself. Beware...you won't want to leave! It is truly as close to Paradise as we have found in our travels. Just be prepared to relax and enjoy doing *not much* a big part of the time. Dive, sightsee, snorkel, fish...whatever, but save plenty of time for doing nothing. Oh yes bring a book or two. You will love sitting on the beach reading and just being there. See you there, maybe.

I have been thinking about going to Belize - either as a visit or for a longer stay. Some might call it retirement. Right now, plans call for another four-five years in the States, then who knows.

Great Web page. Four of us will be traveling to A.C. for the first time in May 99. It's great to get a feel for the place first. We plan to R & R, snorkel, fish and eat but 1 of us is handicapped. Should this be a problem with the sand roads, etc.? We're staying at the Royal Palm Beach Club. Any suggestions for us?

Marty: thanks for the links and info. I found your pages while wandering around previously. They look great.....good work. Ambergris Caye sounds like a wonderful piece of paradise. I hope we can make it down there. Our plans are somewhat up in the air yet. How do 40 hotel/resorts exist on a small island? The tourist business must work well for you. I understand that the recent hurricane did not do much damage to most of the Cayes other than move some sand around. If true, you are lucky, must of been a heck of a blow though. I have done some travel planning, Hawaii and Mexico, on the web. It is a good source of information. As you no doubt know, it provides even small resorts and B & B's the means to become visible (advertise) at a very low cost. We have found some great places that we might not have found out about otherwise. My point? AmbergrisCaye.com and Belizenet.com look good, have a lot of info....hope they work as well for you as they do for me.

Bubba and I visited your beautiful island paradise in December '97. We are looking forward to this year's trip. My husband and I stayed at Tropica Beach Resort. We had a wonderful time and made some great friends who we can hardly wait to see again. Manuel was most accomodating and Pedro was a terrific bartender. In scanning the guest book it seems many people have the same idea about moving to your island. Who knows? Perhaps one day dreams can become reality. I am curious to know what criteria are needed to teach school on the island? If anyone knows and cares to let me know, I would greatly appreciate the information. Thanks, Kim

I just returned yesterday from spending a VERY SHORT week in San Pedro...I fell absolutely in love and cannot wait to return. I'm coming back in May of '99 and that now seems like forever to me!! I met so many wonderful people but I'm especially fond of the crew of a little glass bottom boat and a little skiff called "Shanely" which is located between the little cemetary and the Conch Shell Hotel.I spent every day with them snorkeling and fishing. It is oowned by a little gentleman named Ramon and Enrique works for him. If anyone could help me out with their last names and addresses I would be very grateful...even better if they have an e-mail address, but I doubt it.

We're thinking about honeymooning on Ambergris Caye & am worried about catching the rainy season. Our wedding is on Fourth of July weekend; just how far into July does the rain begin? Can we expect total deluges or just afternoon cloudbursts?? I'd love to hear from anyone who's been at that time of year. Also, any tips about traveling from Southern California without spending a ton of money & without doing a plane to bus to car to bus to ferry to taxi... ordeal would be appreciated too! This island looks incredible & I hope to see it in person next year.

This is a great site and I know many people see these comments. My last posting was December 2, 1997 in which I sang the praises of Ramon's Village. We have made some 9 trips to Ramon's Village over the past 7-8 years, bringing with us many groups of 15-30 people. I must warn you if you are planning to stay at Ramon's Village in the near future, there is major construction in progress. Your reservationist may have "forgotten" to tell you about the inconvenience -- no swimming pool or adjacent area. Stateside owners/managers of Ramon's Village have patronized me and my group of 30 other guest scheduled to stay at Ramon's October 17-24 by saying the noise, eyesore and lack of amenities will be "entertaining". Believe me, I have been at Ramon's during other construction periods -- there is nothing entertaining about the experience. So, be sure to check on the construction and amenities well in advance of your travel dates to Ramon's Village.

It was way back in 1973 that my husband George and I, along with 6 of our children, flew to Belize city, boarded a supply boat, and rode to Ambergris Caye for the first time. We were with others from Mississippi and after our wonderful first week then, we returned the next year and every year for many years thereafter. The town of San Pedro was unspoiled, had few tourists and we fell in love with the town and its people. Ramon and Mickey, Adolpho, George and so many others made us feel a part of their paradise. I will come back soon but I know the charm of those early visits can never be duplicated. Hello to any and all who remember us, those crazy gringos from Mississippi who first started Ramon's. Any information would be wonderful, whether it's for Belize, Costa Rica, or Mexican ports. Thanks, Victoria & Fred

When I visited Ambergris Caye 18 yrs. ago, I stayed on the south edge of town. The rooms were on the beach and had thathed roofs, not real modern. My husband and I are considering a trip to the Island next year and I'am looking for a quaint, clean place to stay. We are not interested in lots of frills. Do you have any suggestions? Teri

We spent our honeymoon on Ambergris Caye and had the best time! Ramon's Village was great - we actually met Ramon (and his brand-new atv). We met several other couples who were married the same day we were (Oct. 11) and went diving and to dinner (Duke's Place was our favorite!) with them several times. The people of San Pedro were so friendly and helpful. We made so many new friends, we can't wait to return soon. This website is so great -- it's the next best thing to being there!

Hi! We visited Ambergris Caye in 1978. It is a beautiful place to see. We made friends with a few children. Licelie Guttierez was one of them. She came here and spent a couple of summers with us. Since then she married a fellow and lived in Minnesota. They visited us a few years ago but we've lost contact. We think they have moved back to San Pedro to live and raise their children. Anyone know how to locate Jim & licelie Stevens, please e-mail us! We hope to come back for another visit some day, but the quiet time is past, when we were there, there were only 4 or 5 small hotels and huts, 1 telephone, and no automobiles. Our son looked for 6 days before finally finding a hamburger!! We loved it!! But it would still be neat to see the changes that have taken place. Thank You.

I visted Ambergris Caye October 97 on a dive trip with ETA tours out of Miami. Accomodations at the Belize Yacht Club were better than anticpated, just be sure to bring some extra towels! The diving with Amigos Del Mar was the best I've ever done- great sites, divemasters, and they take care of your gear. The entire 8 day package including lodging, diving and airfare out of Miami was about $900- what a deal! This was the best trip ever! The people are fabulous, the diving world class, and the island is beautiful! Be sure to rent a golf cart and see the less inhabited northern areas of the island. I'll be back in February, then maybe forever!

My wife and I went to Ambergis Caye through the Ambassadair Travel club from October 25 to November 1, 1997. We had never experienced anything like this island, because it was so laid back and the people were friendly. We stayed at Ramon's Village in the thatched hut cabanas. The cabana we had was air conditioned, which was needed since we were no right on the beach. The accomodations were adequate. We were beach bums most of the week and only took one snorkeling trip, the rest of the time we just laid on the beach, relaxed and read. Favorite dining spots were Elvi's Kitchen, Celi's, and Little Italy's. Breakfast was a Dukes, accross the street from Ramon's. Don't go to Dukes if you are in a hurry, because they aren't. Food prices are reasonable on the island and seafood is fresh, plentiful and very good. We had read about how laid back the island was, but couldn't really beleive it until we experienced it. We would go back.

We first visited Ambergris Caye last year and had absolute blast. Were coming back!! and arrive Jan. 22, 1998. Our trip last year was a big success due to Jerry and Mario Ack who work out of Sol Caribe for Eduardo Brown. They are the most fun guides and one of the reasons we decided to return this year. Hi guys: What a site. Magnificent. We were in Ambergis at the Caribbean Villas last April, and met Alan and he told us his plans for the site. Well, it is better than I could have imagined. We still remember the great service at Carribean Villas and how nicely Wil and Susan treated us. And our snorkeling with Lil Alphonse. And how can we forget Maralyn's Rasta Pasta Restaurant. And last, but not least...how wonderful this site is for sheer viewing.

Awesome web site! The first time we went to Ambergris there were barely any telephones. Last time they were advertising the internet on the local radio station. Your site makes me want to jump on a plane and see what's new this week. Great job! Peter

Great site, lots of informative info. I will be there in a week. My only comment on the site is to change the yellow text in the diving section. The yellow with the black waves in the background in hard to read. Acquas contrast well with black, so does white. Actually I just ask some of my coworkers and they felt that the best thing to do is to change the background and keep the color. So hope it helps. CJ :)

I was visiting your site for info for a friend. I found it wonderful, very informative, and very different from any other site I have visited. Being able to read comments or leave comments is great. I was on Ambergris Caye in 1992 with 3 other women and we stayed at the newly opened Caribbean Villas. It was wonderful, quiet, out of the way. We hired a boat from Guerro who took us snorkeling every day. And, is it Manuel, can't remember his name, who brings fresh squeezed orange juice in the morning and homemade ice cream in the afternoon. It was wonderful. One of the women with me has since died and now her husband wants to visit the island to see what all the excitement was about. Needless to say, we loved it. The Lalas are wonderful hosts.

My family and I had a great time in San Pedro in our visit in March of 1996. We are already in the planning stages of our trip in March of 1998. We stayed at the Mayan Princess Resort and plan to stay there again. We are interested in checking out day trips to the mainland for visits to the Zoo and jungle trips. Please forward any information you have.

Hi all: My girlfriend and I were in San Pedro February 95. My first vacation and it couldn't have been better. The wind, the sun, the palms and the people were beyond my imagination. Madonna was right when she wrote that song about your island. We loved it. Please give our best to the staff at the Playador Hotel (especially Norman), we will be back next year. Wendy and Andree

We had to move the website once, and the software for this guestbook had to change. So I retyped these older entries from the old guestbook into the new guestbook on 1/15/97. Thus every message below this has a date of Jan. 15...

To Marty Casado: Have really enjoyed browsing your site, it's great source for a person like me who is planning their first trip to the island. Hotels that don't list with your site are really missing a great opportunity to reach people like me. Making a reservation by e-mail after viewing a hotel's page from a web-site, with up current price data, has to be the least painful method ever invented. Your message site has also been informative, thanks for the prompt response to my boat inquiry. I'll be checking out your site regularly as I prepare for my trip to Belize over the holidays. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Susan at Caribbean Villas called Western Union. They suggested that this person authorize a family member or someone at the bank to withdraw money and take it to Western Union and have it sent to themselves in Belize. Any Western Office in Belize that has a computer can pak payments out to them The San Pedro office has a computer.
