Much media publicity has
been done throughout the world concerning the first millennium born baby.
Nine months ago a city in the United States offered a free night's stay
in a prestigious hotel to participants, in order to ensure a pregnancy
and possibly a millennium baby. Even though most of the participants did
get pregnant, none of them gave birth to the Millennium baby. In Belize
City, the first baby was born at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital just
fifteen minutes into the new year. San Pedro also boasts its first baby
born on the island. A bouncing baby boy was born at the San Pedro Lions
Clinic at 5:20 p.m. on January
4th, 2000. The 7 ‡
pound baby is the son of Lydia Sutherland and Thomas "Joe" Ack, Sr. Dr.
Lenin Quintana Reyes, assisted by Nurse Veronica Caserez, delivered San
Pedro's first baby of the year 2000. The proud father told the
San Pedro Sun, "We are not certain of
the name yet but it will definitely be Joe something." The first Y2K baby
will be awarded the following prizes donated by the business community: a
welcome check of $100 to the newest San Pedrano by the San Pedro Town
Board, a savings account valued at $200 donated by the Belize Bank, free
cable installation by Coral Cable Vision, a baby basket with baby
merchandise valued at $75 donated by Island Super Market, round trip
airfare to Belize City by both Tropic Air and Maya Island Air, a savings
account valued at $100 by Atlantic Bank Ltd., and an 8 x 10 framed
photograph of the newborn by Kay Scott. The San Pedro
Sun congratulates the first San Pedrano of the
21st century and his
proud parents.
The San Pedro
Sun also honors the last baby of the
20th century born in
San Pedro Town. Born to Vianey and Rudy Duran on December
29th, 1999 was a
healthy seven pound baby girl. Dr. Daniel Gonzalez of the Ambergris
Health Services Clinic delivered the last child of 1999 at 3:55 p.m. on
the said date. Today, both daughter and mother are doing well. The baby,
who has not yet been named, adds a fourth member to the Duran family.
Congratulations Vianey and Rudy.
