Past Lion President Ruben Gonzalez, outgoing Lions Queen Irenie Gonzalez, newly crowned Lions Queen Luisana Nuñez and San Pedro Lion President Severo Guerrero

Numerous friends and supporters of the San Pedro Lions Club gathered at the Lions Den last Sunday to witness the crowning of Miss Lions 2000-2001. Additionally, the event was a fundraising effort for the annual Belize Lions District 59 Convention. An all-day chicken barbecue and food sale was held to raise funds for the queen's participation at the convention April 28th - 30th in Belmopan.

Master of Ceremonies, Lion Beto Marin livened up the event doing periodical announcements throughout the day. The official ceremony was opened by members of the San Pedro Dance Company who graciously performed three dance selections before the crowning. Reigning Miss Lions Irenie Gonzalez was then escorted on stage by her father, Past President Lion Ruben Gonzalez. In addressing the gathering she expressed thanks to the club for choosing her as last year's queen. She reminisced about the great times she experienced at the last convention held in San Estevan and wished Luisana the best of luck at the upcoming convention. Newly elected Queen Luisana Nuñez was then escorted on stage by President Severo Guerrero who thanked Irenie for the fine job she did representing the club and thanked Luisana for accepting the position. Irenie then did the honors of sashing and crowning Luisana who, in accepting, mentioned that she was honored to represent the San Pedro Lions Club and would do her best to make the club proud of her. The celebration then continued with music and plenty to eat and drink.

The club would like to remind any member of the general public who wishes to join them at the convention that registration fees are as follows: Lions and male guests - $35 each; female guest - $30; youth guest - $25. A five dollar discount is being offered for registration of Lion couples. The registration fee entitles you to a registration kit that includes a bag, official convention souvenir booklet, raffle tickets, souvenirs and free entry into the official opening ceremonies, hospitality booth, seminars, queen pageant, convention dance with Sam Hamilton, parade, lunch on April 30th and jump-up. Convention 2000 promises to be a memorable one. Anyone wishing to participate may contact any member of the San Pedro Lions Club, visit during the weekend barbecue or call 026-2477.
