Good news for Belikin fans in the
United States-they may just be able to purchase their favorite Belizean
beer sometime soon. According to Kevin Bowen of Belize Brewing, a
completely new, state of the art brewery will soon be completed and plans
are in the works to possibly export beer at that time. While there has
been interest from certain locations in the US, nothing has been
negotiated thus far.
Mr. Bowen stated that the new expansion increases the
production capacity at least three to four times more than it previously
was, therefore brewing beer for export would be no problem. If the
company decides to export, it would only be the regular Belikin Beer that
would be available on the foreign market.
More good news is that a recycling grinder for plastic
will hopefully be located on the island by the end of this month. The
machine was scheduled to be here in late February, but circumstances
delayed the arrival. Mr. Bowen informed the San Pedro
Sun that four of these grinders were purchased to reduce
the new plastic bottles into chips. Permanent
locations for the
machines are San Pedro, Caye Caulker and the Coca Cola Bottling plant in
Ladyville. The fourth will be a mobile unit that will travel to the outer
districts. All plastic soft drink bottles will be purchased by the
company for five cents each and then chipped into recyclable
material.
The San Pedro
Sun congratulates Bowen and Bowen for their efforts to
move into the new millennium with a cleaner, safer environmental
plan. We also wish them the best of luck in their efforts to
provide many more people a chance to taste their fine
products.
