Although it was a poorly attended
Costa Maya meeting, the results showed promise as Gach Guerrero gave his
report to those gathered of what he has accomplished so far. At this
time, the 10th annual
festival is still being planned for August
15th -
20th. The countries of
Guatemala and Mexico have confirmed their attendance for the event.
Money remains an issue. Sponsorship letters have been
sent and the committee still awaits replies from many of the businesses
being solicited for contributions. The Belize Tourism Board and major
corporate sponsors have been contacted as well. The committee welcomes
any support the community is able to offer in this regard, either by
sponsorship, donations or their aid in the solicitation of others.
Sponsors may contact Gach Guerrero, or drop their donations off, at Amigo
Travel; checks should be made out to "Costa Maya Festival".
It was announced that Grand Raffle tickets are
presently being printed and should be distributed for sale shortly. The
raffle will feature a Grand Prize choice between a lot with house,
facilitated by the Belize Rural South office, or cash; a
2 nd place prize of
$1000; a 3rd and
4th prize round trip
ticket from Belize to Houston/Belize to Dallas (American Airlines has
confirmed sponsorship of the Belize/Dallas trip); and
5th place - $500.
Tickets will be sold for $10 from selected agents only.
In regards to the pageant, El Salvador has confirmed
their participation and Miss Sandra Glower Silis will represent their
country. She is a 19 year-old student studying Judicial Science and was
the first runner-up in the Miss El Salvador Beauty Pageant 2000. She is
five foot seven inches tall and weighs 120 pounds. Her measurements are
33-25-34 and she enjoys reading, going to the movies and being with her
friends.
The popular Belize band, Gilharry 7 and both island
dance companies have promised to entertain for the festival. Mary
Beissner has kindly offered her services as the person in charge of the
accounts this year. Mr. Sanchez Riveroll of Chetumal, Mexico has been
approached for the rental of the stage and sound system. A proposal will
be written and submitted for his approval.
Information continues to be received on bands and many
recommendations made for the festival, but cost is the major concern.
Anyone having any reasonable suggestions for entertainment, may contact a
member of the committee or Gach Guerrero at 2180.
