The recent fire disaster has left a bad taste in the mouths of all locals and residents of San Pedro and kept us trying to look for solutions. We have heard from local government representatives that we should shortly have two portable pumps brought to San Pedro. We have heard many recommendations and suggestions but unfortunately nothing has been done. To get results one must be persistent and believe whole-heartedly in what he or she makes up his/her mind to do. Mr. Ramon Nuñez, who has worked tirelessly to help make a hospital for San Pedro a reality is helping once again to make another necessity a reality. Mr. Nuñez' concern that the community has not received a fire truck prompted him to take matters into his own hands through his contacts in the USA. Mr. Nuñez has reported some excellent news to the San Pedro Sun.

He recently confirmed that a fire truck will be donated to San Pedro Town. After several conversations with a friend of his from the USA, Mr. Robby Robson, and lobbying with different officials there, they were successful in achieving their goal. The Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, has agreed to donate a 1965 Ford Pumper 732 fire truck to the town of San Pedro. The truck is a donation made by Mr. Jeff Cash, Fire Chief of the Cherryville Fire Department and was presented to the Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina for delivery. Mr. Ramon Nuñez will be traveling to North Carolina on February 13th, 2000 to officially receive the keys for the fire truck in a special ceremony that will take place on Valentine's Day. Mr. Ramon Nuñez will represent the San Pedro Town Board at this ceremony. The donors have agreed to ship the truck at their own expense all the way to Miami and are only asking the San Pedro Town Board to pay the freight from Miami to Belize. This seems to be a very minimal fee to pay in comparison to the disasters that can be avoided by having additional working fire trucks in San Pedro. We applaud the efforts of Mr. Ramon Nuñez, his friends in the USA and everyone that is making this donation possible.
