The people have spoken and final counts show
they voted for a "solid" People's United Party to lead them for the next
three years as representatives of the San Pedro Town Council. A close
election kept many awake until the wee hours of the night awaiting the
final ballot counts.
It has been almost five weeks since the candidates for
the San Pedro Town Council Elections 2000 were announced by both the
Peoples United Party (PUP) and United Democratic Party (UDP). A large
amount of split-party votes showed that a portion of the population
wanted a mixed party Town Council. The newly elected San Pedro Town
Council is headed by the re-elected Mayor, Alberto Nuñez who won by a
margin of 903 to 818 votes over Mr. Manuel Heredia Jr. of the United
Democratic Party. Newly elected councilors and their counts are Santiago
Acosta (956 votes), Omar Arceo (1,005 votes), Baldimar Graniel (1,034
votes), Domingo Perez (915 votes), Mel Spain (982 votes), and Pedro
Vasquez (960 votes). The total amount of voters represented approximately
72% of the entire 2,461 registered voters in San Pedro.
Total counts for the remaining candidates were
as follows: Severo Guerrero (852 votes), Nano Guerrero (782 votes),
Genaro Nuñez (791 votes), Gloria Guerrero (805 votes), Justin Arana (765
votes) and Romel Gomez (789 votes).
This being the
first year since the Town Council Act, 1999 was established, the Mayor
was elected by an electorate instead of being appointed through his seat
on Council. He will serve a three year term and be spared the yearly
process of being re-appointed or possibly relieved of his post as Mayor.
The newly elected Council now has the task of electing the Deputy Mayor
from one of the six councilors at the first meeting of the new Council.
The Deputy Mayor may, at any time, be removed from office at a meeting of
the Council by a majority resolution of the Council members present and
voting. A notice of the resolution must be given to all members of
Council fourteen days before a vote is taken.
The people of San Pedro have spoken. They have elected
this team and have put their trust in them to serve the community. Let us
hope they return the trust that has been instilled in them and work for
the benefit and progress of all residents of San
Pedro.
