distribution of relief supplies

San Pedro's show of heart through a successful
fundraiser for the earthquake victims in El Salvador last month also made it
possible for Salvadoran residents from San Pedro to travel there to help
alleviate the victim's sorrow. The group brought with them much needed medicine,
housing materials and other goods. The team was headed by Mr. Pepe Molina who,
along with other residents, personally distributed the goods. They recently
returned to San Pedro and are happy to give the following report.
They first presented nine cases of medicine to Dr.
Armando Enrique Gonzalez, Director of the Medical Unit of Tecoluca, in the
department (district) of La Paz, aiding a population of approximately
16,600. In Acaquapa San Cayetano Istepeque, a department
of San Vicente, they distributed clothing, food and table top stoves to a
population of 2,500 inhabitants. In San Luis La
Heradura Sacatecoluca in the district of el Buen Samaritano, they distributed
building supplies to a total of US$8,517.50 benefiting 580 families and some 96
homes. Given out were 975 pieces of zinc, 1,216 pieces of lumber, 64 paint
brushes and 256 pounds of roof nails. In Cojutepeque
Village, some 36 kilometers from the capital, they distributed zinc, food and
lumber. Mrs. Marina Lucero and Mr. Adrian Hernandez of El
Salvador witnessed the distribution and expressed their appreciation for the
generous donations from the people of San Pedro. They commented, "May God bless
each and everyone who made this donation possible to help those in
need." The El Salvadoran residents of San Pedro
spearheading this project also reported the following financials: Expenses -
barbecue expenses and transportation - $3,264.00; lumber, zinc and food expenses
- $27,800.75; medicine purchased from JDB Ltd. - $6,398.00; to a total of
$37,462.75. Total donations received were $41,462.75. This leaves a balance of
$4,000 which has been deposited in the Belize Bank account. This balance will be
used by the Salvadoran community to help in other
emergencies. Through this medium, the committee would like
to thank all the people who contributed to this donation for El Salvador.
Hotels, gift shops, fruit stands, shops, Reef Radio, San Pedro Lions Club,
contractors, residents of the island, the San Pedro Town Council, Area
Representative, San Pedro Dance Company, Angel Nuñez, Melly Kumul, Rosario
Guerrero, all who helped during the barbecue, the media, and the entire
community. The community of Salvadorans resident of San Pedro thank everyone for
this kind gesture and May God bless you all and our Isla Bonita.
