Sunday, Hicaqueños (residents of Caye Caulker) exercised their rights by
electing representatives for the Caye Caulker Village Council. The elections
were held at the Community Center and brought out 522 voters to the polls. Apart
from the two slates, two independent candidates, (Mineli Young and Ramon Reyes
Jr.) offered their candidacy to serve on the Council.
Running for Village Chairman was current Chairman Fermin
Marin who was contested by Gerald Badillo Jr. At the end of the day it was Mr.
Marin who received the most votes (280) making him once again the head of the
Council. Mr. Badillo received 238 votes. Of the fifteen
people running for councilors, the six elected to office were: Alberto
Villanueva Jr. (261 votes), Ralph Humes (227), William Gideon (211), Rudolfo
Valentino Marin (206), Javier Novelo (193) and Emmanuel Rodriguez (192). At
press time, the newly elected Council had not yet assigned portfolios for each
Councilor. The other candidates were: Alberto Pacheco (190
votes), Claudia Catalina Rosado (189), Robert Blease (188), Charles Young (176),
Thomas Badillo (169), Ramon Reyes Sr. (160), Bartolome Rodriguez (156), Mineli
Young (119) and Ramon Reyes Jr. (62).
