Councilor Merlene "Mel" Spain is the new deputy mayoress for San Pedro. The
official swearing-in ceremony was held Tuesday evening at the San Pedro Town
Hall and was presided over by Town Administrator Alberto Villanueva.
Present to witness this grand occasion were the San Pedro
Town Council, Area Representative Patty Arceo and members of the community.
During the short ceremony Mayor Alberto Nuñez welcomed everyone and recalled
that it had been a year since they were first elected to serve on the Town
Council. He wished Mrs. Spain all the best and expressed his confidence in her
to do a good job, as was done last year by the previous deputy
mayor.
The Town Administrator then had the honor of
swearing in Mrs. Spain who received thunderous applause from the audience.
During her acceptance speech the newly appointed deputy mayoress commented, "I
humbly accept the challenge to assume the position and responsibility of deputy
mayoress and I assure you that all my positive energy and determination will be
invested in working closely with our Area Representative, our Mayor and you to
whom we owe respect, loyalty and progress." She went on to say, "This challenge
only makes me more determined to prove to you, the residents of this island,
that as a woman and a mother I will fight for your children and your progress
like I defend my very own."
The Area
Representative then "welcomed aboard" Deputy Mayoress Spain, who also received
congratulatory words from the past Deputy Mayor Baldemar Graniel and her fellow
councilors. After the official ceremony the congregation was invited to
refreshments in Mrs. Spain's honor.
